Long term westy resto

  1. Your making better progress than me at the moment dude

It seems everytime i get a spare half hour its chucking it down and blowing a gale

  2. Yep, its been doing that here too. Got a huge tarp tied over the front of the bus so i can at least work on it if its raining (though not when its horizontal rain).
I'm sure the wind has actually moved the bus using the tarp as a sail. :(

  3. Primer now applied. :)

I found some more rot under the arch where it meets the panel the seat mounts to when i wire brushed the old flaking underseal off. More welding required. :'(

Also found out just how weak and rusty the front panel is around the windscreen. :(

  4. I seem to have had quite a productive day working on my camper today and i only felt like setting it on fire once too. ;)

I adjusted the hinge pillar slightly with my homemade hinge pillar tweaking tool:

I over tweaked it a little so had to add a washer under each bottom bolt as i made the mistake of only tweaking the bottom hinge so the door sat skew in the opening. ::)
I'll remove the door again and adjust the top hinge eventually.

Even with the washers it still doesn't touch the arch. ;D

Seam sealed the A pillar repairs:

Did a little painting using some radiator enamel i had left over.

Finally removed the last of the OG VW steel off my old cab door.
It was really quite rotten inside.

  5. I've finally got the last of the arch related welding finished. ;D
    [IMG]

Did this bit lying in a puddle of mud in the howling rain and wind. Only thought about how dangerous it was when i noticed my grinder half submerged in the puddle.

  6. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

Keep going - it's getting colder!

Karma to you for pressing on when the lightweights think it's too cold already!

Every bit done is another bit done. :)

  7. I need to get it done no matter what the weather as i want to get the heater channel, door pillar, 1/4 panels etc welded into my bug.

Arch is finally done and painted:

I made the mistake of closing the door while the white paint was still wet and stuck the door seal to the arch.

    Solid again:

    Front panel water-tight again:

  8. Oh poo. :(
    [IMG]

Door is a little crispy too.

  9. Hmmm :(
    [IMG]

    Offside

    Eek

    Nearly there:

  10. Keep up the good work zeb

liking that door hinge adjuster, are they fitting ok now ?

  11.
  12. Diddymen,
door fits better now but is in need of replacement hinges as they are still wobbly.

    Baydreams,
if i had the cash i'd have replaced the whole front end as it needs the front panel and probably the inner panel replacing too. The arches and inner front valance could also need doing.
The problem is working outside with just a tarp for coverage, local cats who will sh1t anywhere and neighbours kids who will nick anything not tied down has stopped me doing the whole lot. Everything i do needs to be finished in a day so it can be turned back into a secure bus again before i finish for the day or it goes walkabout. :(
I just rust cured eveything i could get to and painted it in chassis black.

    Got it painted this morning:

  15. When it eventually stops raining and get a little warmer i might get the chance to actually use it.

  16. Heres some lovely rust in the passengers door:

    Rot cut out:

A little more found above the step:

    New metal welded in:

My angle grinder died at this point so a trip into town to get another wasted me a whole dry sunny afternoon. :(

One back and the welds ground down, i applied some filler:

Then the rain came down. :(

Got this to sort out next. :(

  17. Keep at it dude its all progress

  18. Hail stopped play this afternoon, just after i'd got some red oxide on it. It now look like the surface of the moon with craters everywhere. :(

I'm getting there slowly. Been dowsing the rear bleed nipples with penetrating oil for the past week in the hope they will come undone.

  19. dog

    dog Tea Boy

great work there buddy, keep it up!

  20. Been dry up in cumbria today so i managed to get some more done.
This filler now looks a little less like cake frosting after a bit of a sanding session. :)
Piccy is corrupted on my camera apparently. :(

The last bit of metal welded into the door:

    Outrigger now repaired:

    and seam sealed to death:

Managed to break the socket on my wheelbrace trying to undo a stubborn nut. :arrggh:

4 came off easily and the 5th refused and cracked the socket. Nut is now not hexagonal so may need carefully cutting off. :(
