  1. Morning All

Can anyone advise me on the inner working of the handle mech on my sliding door as its a sealed unit?

The current situation is I can get it to close but it does not release when I raise the handle.
Its the threaded bar version Not the cable.

Alternatively does anyone have a replacement Part number 214843653J so I can give that a try?

As always thanks in advance as this is my first time resto

Up is pull in the back end.
    Down is release.

What you have at the front is a hook and a bar that go forward into the catch on the pillar.

At the back is a standard double latching car door mechanism.

Handle down pulls the release on the rear mechanism and pulls the hook out the front.

Handle up pulls on the rear mechanism once it is engaged on the striker on the door pillar. If it misses the striker it does nothing.

The pull in at the back is adjusted by the hex joining section and lock nut. You unlock it and screw it towards the back of the bus until it just disconnects then while it is disconnected you wind a turn forward or backward, poke the loose end in the hex joiner and then wind the joiner forwards.

  4. Hi Back to my sliding door problem I don't believe my sliding door mechanism has the ability to pull in at the rear it is the single rod mechanism with a large spring causing the tension to be held on the locking action. the locking mechanism I can get to wk but when the handle is released the door flies open again I believe the mechanism should hold the tension on the mechanism but it just releases it straight off again.
    Its a very late 1979
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  5. When you slide the door shut, does the lock on the rear edge latch?

  6. no it doesn't because I can't retain the tension. should the mechanism have a lock position. it will lock if the handle is held down but if handle is released the door opens again

  7. Any thoughts anyone ? Please help

  8. That is odd. Here's what my late 79 slider (with release cable) does, for comparison: push handle down, front and back latches released, door rear pops out. Slide door back, plate at front edge of door engages with rear latch to hold door open. Push handle up (slightly): front door edge latch released, door can slide forward. Slide door forward, rear swivels in, both front and rear latches engage.

  9. Post a pic of your door handle and innards.

  14. When you operate themain front handle, does anything happen down the back? Assume the main front lock is pulling on the connecting rod?
