Loads of smoke

I bet that’s the problem I know I’ve done them.

  2. Push rod tubes look new ?:thinking::thinking:

  3. I replaced the pushrod tubes, plus silicone seals. They look ok, no leaks.

Looked on a few websites and now see that you can buy valve stem seals.
Missed them in the build, but JK seal set states, they are not included and not required.
I won't be pulling the heads just to fit them.

Be nice to understand why it only does it on one side though.
For it to leak back through the valves it's got to be half way up the rocker cover, which ties in with it taking a bit of time before it smokes.

I fitted a stiffer anti roll bar a while back, guess that's made me a bolder on roundabouts!

‘IF’ the smoke is from the exhaust pipe it’s not from an external oil leak.

Valve stem seals don’t work on a horizontal engine and VW deleted them. JK, for once, are correct and if you do fit them they’ll fall off and you’ll wonder what the hard little round things in the sump are.

The camshaft runs in one direction; it’ll be throwing slightly more oil towards one side of the engine. Possibly.:)

  7. We are just guessing at the moment and my guess is that the smoke is from the exhaust which has been going on a while but not noticed while driving, but showed up doing circles in the car park. Burning oil and that's why the oil level has gone down.

  8. Presume the dipstick is the right length and some dipstick hasn't messed with it ?

  9. Its obviously wheel spin .......no ? ......... that's what happens on Fast&Loud

Type 4 engined cars , Porsche 914 ,VW 412 etc. had sump baffle plates to stop oil surge and oil starvation ... (which is why the 911 is dry sump)

It doesn`t take a lot of oil to produce loads of smoke .....and I`m with the valve stem train of thought

  10. if the push rod tubes are leaking the oil's not going to fall on the floor while driving all that tin wear will push the oil onto the exhaust.

The best way to find where the issue, degrease the outside of the engine. drive it short distance then check it.

If the valve guides are worn this usually shows as a puff of smoke on starting. Valve guides can be replaced and basically if you can wobble the stems from side to side , they are worn. There is usually a lot of brownish /carbon build up round the leaky stems under the valve cover where the half burnt oil gets spat back by the exhaust.
So if it looks crispy brown on the head round the valve springs.. worn.

You’re absolutely correct, if there is a leak all that tin wear will push the oil onto the exhaust – but not into the exhaust and if the smoke is coming out of the exhaust pipe its coming from inside the engine, not the outside.

  17. @Geordie looks good, satisfying when it first fires up. Quality hat.
@mikedjames : I'll check for crispy brown, will also check the tappet gapping. Failing that I will make it breakdown in Gamble :)

  18. Yes. The smoke is defo coming from the exhaust. It is not burning oil continuously whilst running straight and is loads of white smoke when it does it. Takes about a minute to fully clear once level again.

I am going with the stem theory and will check it out a bit more.

White smoke is generally associated with water – head gasket failure in a water-cooled engine – or brake fluid from a leaking servo. Is the brake fluid level okay? If the engine is cold it could be condensation burning off in the exhaust but not if the engine is at normal temperature.

  20. Thats normal its an exhaust smoke does come out of it and more when you start in up.
