Line boring yay or nay?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by nickyd, Mar 6, 2019.

  1. Hi all,

I'm pretty sure my 1600TP needs a line bore. However, recently I have heard from a couple of people that a line bore isn't worth it...

Any engine bods on here give me any info? Are there companies that people can recommend?

I spoke to GAC and he said that the line bore never really gives a true cut and you just end up running in to problems.

Obviously the other option is a new case ££££££!!!

    What do you guys think?

There’s a place in Bristol that turned my engine block in to scrape by not understanding what they were doing with a line bore

    Who are Gac?

The cases were line bored when manufactured, done properly there should be zero issues

  4. GAC Motorsport. They do all the Formula Vee stuff. Nice guy.

I believe there are two ways to line bore. One with the handheld cutter that gets spun by a drill and one that is a big machine that you clock the case and set it all up before making the cut.

Originally they would have been line bored on a big VW spec line boring machine.

Most of the usual VW engine companies use the smaller handheld version. I just wondered if anyone had a line bore done and it be ok?

I got a quote from a company with one of the big machines and it was going to be 'at least £350'....

Ill bet Stateside could do the line bore successfully, they can do type 4 motors

  6. £350 seems over the top

I think if you ask either of the two major engine builders that advertise monthly in C &B they will work on your block if you ask them. And it should be under £350.

Assuming it needs a line bore becaise it has low oil pressure and your bearings have worn grooves in the engine case.

  8. Obviously the people you are talking to don`t know what they are talking about ,
Stateside align bore every type 4 case mains and cam

  9. Nothing wrong with it. Its the person who sets it up and carrying out the work that is the week link just like in most machine jobs.

Personally wouldn’t get into trying to find the cheapest out there, £350 sounds a lot of money but it’s a fairly specialist piece of equipment and job

  11. Yeah, I'm not trying to find the cheapest. I'm trying to weigh up the right thing to do. I'm going to 1776 so there will be other machining work. So just going through options of modding my existing case etc, or starting with a new case and going from there.

The main aim is to produce a strong reliable engine, not the cheapest (un reliable) engine :) Can't be done with breaking down in France somewhere because I got the cheapest machine work done!

I did speak to Stateside a while ago and always heard good things. Just a bit of a trek to get there.

I was recommended Woodmill Engineering in Southampton by Scott of SGS Aircooled. He used them for all his engine machining. All the way up to his 2232 nitrous turbo T1 drag race engine. A 1776 shoukd be fairly straight forward for them.
