Well, fused relays are handy things . But in the configuration for LB charging you have, I can't think of any fault condition that would cause it to blow. Does no harm being there, but it's not really serving any purpose.
It's best to have a fuse as close to the source as possible ie the battery The relays with fuses offer some protection as it isolates the battery's from each other should a short happen on the cable between either battery and relay As for should you fit a fuse up to you I have a fused mine for extra protection The vans have no fuse going from the battery to the starter and onto the fuse box at the front or back again to the coil but most modem cars do
I ended up buying a ready made split charge loom off eBay for a couple of reasons. The instructions are confusing me though It has main wire from starter batt to relay. It has main wire from relay to leisure batt pos. It has brown wire from relay to leisure batt neg. Then it has red wire from relay, which it says connect to an ignition live , usually live side of coil. Surely this wire needs to attatch to the alternator??
I had the dame worries when I fitted mine - probably the same kit ! I reckon the relay has some sort of automatic voltage switching within the relay - I also expected a trigger wire to the alternator ... Wire it up as per instructions and it'll be fine .
Alternator or coil - as long as it is ignition controlled feed I believe so relay is only working when engine is running. I used alternator as my trigger.
I have a smart com split charger that connects between main and leisure battery and doesn't need to be connected to the alternator £18 on eBay Does exactly what it says !
Rayne automotive sounfs familiar ... But it was a couple of years ago . Just wire as per instructions - it'll be fine ..
Don't run it to the coil. If your main battery is flat, you'll be using the leisure battery to start the engine, which will knacker it. Use the alternator output.
well i had a suspicion there'd be some problem with it coming off the coil......didnt know what but just didnt seem right. but the blokes sold loads of them so who knows. just when i think i understand something i get get flummoxed again
Go round and poke him in the eye. The relay needs to join the two batteries together for charging purposes when the engine's running, hence driving it from the alt output. If you just switch it off the ignition, both batteries will be joined together when you're operating the starter, which you don't want.
Doesn't sound like it, there's only an IN/OUT and earth on a VSR, not even @volkswombat would be confused with one of them.
have exited just under the fire extinguisher as in the photo below. But some have taken other routes. I.e. through the firewall or possibly even up by the side of the spare wheel well
