Leaky 34 PICT -3

  1. Hi Folks,

Just picked up panel van, newbie to it all, leak from couple of spots marked up in picture.

I'd assume it's seals failed , or is it a bit more complicated than that?!

Thought I'd ask before I end up with springs all over the place and missing screws;)

All help much appreciated .... Carb 34 leak spots.jpg

  2. Throttle spindle seals and pump diaphragm is my guess. It could be over fueling causing it to come out the spindle, any play in it ?

  3. Worn spindle bushes..... and potentially a ruptured accelerator pump diaphragm.

  4. 1st arrow would say throttle spindal bushes worn . 2nd arrow woukd Say accelerator pump diaphragm worn . The pump diaphragm is included in the seal kits . But the spindal bush isn't usually theres a guy on eBay that sells new brass bushes for them but forget his name .
I rebuilt mine and the old bushes were very worn fell to bits once removed just plastic. New bushes were a tight fit but once all back together solved all the leaky problems . If you do it yourself takes loads of pics and keep everything in order . There not to complicated just have to make sure all is spotless going back together. There's loads of write up vids about on tinterweb .
Someone else no doubt will be along shortly with a better explanation.

  6. Many thanks all!

Ordered from repair set from VW Heritage earlier, so have seen on ebay set with bushes so will send back vw heritage.

Got a fair bit of play on spindle, so imagine worn bushes!

Separately (although could have some bearing) what I did do, which probably wasn't best fix in hindsight, although idle was fine when I picked up, it soon wouldn't idle. I adjusted idle speed screw initially 6 half turns, which got it ticking over. Again it returned to not idling, adjusted 5 more half turns (before running up) then noticed a hose loose (!!) - fuel ventilation hose - running from roof of engine compartment, to, I assume air box(?). Anyway stopped proceedings/investigation as it was late, then noticed this morning fuel dripping down the hill! Looking at a bit about 34-PICT 3 adjusting idle speed may not be the solution to idle or prob need to follow a proper set up procedure - and maybe this has bearing on leak as over fueling has been mentioned etc.... although it was *******ing out (well drip every 20 secs)

Anyway will out on putting all back together and see if solved..

You need the repair kit for the pump diaphragm and possibly the fuel metering valve also in the kit - this can leak and cause some problems too..

And the bushes for the wobbly leaky spindle - but fuel should not run out of the spindle in very large quantity if the bushes are all that is worn, as there should only ever be maximum about one accelerator pump's worth of fuel sitting above the butterfly. More and you have another problem

  8. Got bushes for spindle in kit, and diaphragm so should be ok. Prob is only one pumps worth just looks more than it is....... thanks
