Late bay problem with running

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by kevin smith, Dec 25, 2018.

  1. Merry Christmas

    I have a 1979 1600cc air cooled T2 which I'm having issues with

It starts and ticks over no problem but when I drive it it "splutters" when I try and take off and between gears needing revs to keep it going

It sounds good at idle and even when revving when stationary just this "dead" / "flat" spot when I drive

    Any suggestions gratefully received

    Thanks

  2. Has it just started doing it?What carbs are you running

  3. What carb dizzy etc ? Could be air ?

  4. Where would air be coming from?

  5. Standard carb

And yes it just started it was "messed" around with to get the emissions right for MOT and the distributor was left slack and it's since then

  6. If the dizzy was loose no doubt it's a timing issue

  7. If you dizzy has been messed with , try a read of these guys http://vw-resource.com/ and start from beginning on set up .

  8. It was set up static because we never had a strobe could it be as simple as just slightly out?

  9. They shouldn’t need to mess wit emissions for mot , it should be visual only and imo run a tad better rich . If you have no air leaks then timing needs redoing including tap pets from the beginning to end just to be sure . Doesn’t take long. Follow thru manual procedure start to finish and make sure carb is set right . Then see what happens . Check your timing marks for year too .

Yes, try another static setup then get a strobe. you probably also need to look up the setting procedure for Best Lean Idle. Which needs a screwdriver and listening.

And try and find a garage staffed by other than monkeys to do the MOT in future:)
A bus should pass the MOT without monkeys messing with the timing or the carburettor and it should still be 100% drivable.
The emissions test it has to pass is extremely lenient by modern standards, if the test centre does not realise then they are a fail..

  11. Out of curiosity, where are you? If any where near South Essex there are a couple of places that MOT Bays correctly!

  12. Pray tell who they are!

  13. Karrs just off Milton Rd in St Helens Rd. Christchurch service station, Christchurch Rd just off Southchurch Ave. Check when Martin is in.

  14. Thanks but not sure where they are! live in Southend area.

  15. Milton Rd is next to Cricketers pub on A13 London Rd. Southchurch Rd is from Queensway roundabout to Thorpe bay.

Scratch that place from your list of trusted garages then!

  18. Thanks for this, I now know where they are. Have been using the same mot place for 6 years (in Southend) for the bus but the guys have now retired. Have you been happy with these guys? Took my mg to the Shoebury garage last year and was quite happy with them, but not many places know our old buses and their qurks.

  19. The guy I use tests at both places on different days and is old school. Pop into Christchurch on a Sat morning and chat, he's at Karrs Tue to Fri I think.
