KUK - 1974 (Scoo - Bay - Blue) Aussie Van's Restoration & Subaru 2.2 conversion

Discussion in 'Restorations' started by SCOO-BAY-BLUE, Jun 21, 2015.

  1. Following the lack of response of a seller on EBay regarding a Subaru 2.2 engine, I did not bid and it was sold for just over£200.00!!!!!!!!!!!!! :(
I was disheartened to think it may be some time before I see, find, bid or buy another for sensible money.
Then by chance today a "1" owner 103k automatic 2.2 petrol/lpg car was found, more by luck as seller did not put 2.2 in the Title.
A deposit has now secured this vehicle. :burp:
    VW/SUBARU/LPG
I have done my own conversion on a Range Rover 3.9 before and had a local LPG Installation company Gas certified all my work so should now I go the full hog, the 2.2 Subaru with LPG as well ?
Anyone else done a dual conversion.?
Photos of Scooby to follow when collected.:chewie:

Subaru only offered LPG for about a year.
The engines didn't like it at all from what I've read.

  3. The Subaru has been collected.!

Dismantling the Subaru begins, regarding the LPG this has had it fitted since 2007 no known engine faults, yet!

  4. Great stuff, that engine looks as it would from a show room almost, what a great find. Crack on with it and don't forget to take out the wiring loom. Do an engine service and change the cam belt now, saves you a job for a while.

  5. Did the Australian owner live in Cairns? This bus with the earz looks very familiar to me!BTW hardly any buses in Aust have those earzs on the other them....opinion seems to be that they are not very effective

  7. The strip down begins :
I wondered why I brought that big roll of yellow 3m Duct tape, now I know why !
I may even photograph each cut connector as well, just to be on the safe side or is that a bit over the top !

  8. In reply to your question the Bay lived in Australia from 1974 - 2013 used for extensive touring / camping all over the country so you may have seen it before.
I do not know or cant remember where the previous owner lived in Australia he has not sent any old photos yet, which may of helped.

    I have a few spares now !

I was given a week for the strip down, but due to doing the loom now myself and saving around £300 I have been given another two weeks grace. !

One look at that wiring confirms it's not worth the bother to me. I guess some people like wires. :)

  16. I have only spent a total of about 4 hrs on the wiring so far .
I left the loom connected so I can check it still starts and runs just in case I may cut a wrong wire or two. (Every time I cut out a connector block or other non used bit). So far only cut one earth by mistake, why have earth leads in at least 3 different colours ?
I think I will change them all to plain black.
I've worked out the cost, and that if it takes me more than 40 hrs in total I should have gone to work and got some overtime instead.
But I would have missed out in my satisfaction smile at the end ! :)

Virtually none of that makes it into the final loom.

That's a relief but blimey all the same, having just wired my camper dash it's a sight to see it all exposed in this modern car ne c'est pas?

    Certainly is.
The loom actually used looks very tidy and compact by comparison!
