It's happening..... Breaking down in France

  1. Yes.

  2. Hmmmmmm.

It was rather wet yesterday (for the first time since fitting the relay) and it's not that well protected from the elements. (Had kinda forgotten to cover it to be honest). Wonder if it's worth removing it as it's not doing anything anyway.

  3. That is what he's saying...

But if you have a look at the wiring diagram of the double relay that I posted, then you'll see that it has a permanent live on it... so if the AFM is stuck open, or the relay itself has gone faulty, then the pump will continuously run...

It won't cause a problem (other than flatten the battery) as the fuel will just be dumped back into the tank via the pressure regulator through the return fuel line!!

  4. That last bit is reassuring!

After it had whirred for a bit, I started and stopped engine to see if that would make it stop.

It didn't, but when it started it smelt very "petrol-ly". So all making sense that its the pump.

Gonna try and find something dry to lay on to remove this hot start relay.

  5. Could be a little fuel has seeped through the injectors...

  6. Thanks Paul - I'm new to all this and don't want to create any misinformation, but in my van if the AFM is stuck open (or the contact at the end is just in the wrong place) then I still need the key in the ignition for the pump to run. I only know this because mine was bad - I have had the top of the AFM, and without the key in the ignition on mine there is no pump - if I cheat the contact at the end I can turn the pump on/off all day long from inside the AFM, but only with the key at the run position.

My van could be acting out of character (which is possible, it's definitely had some 'intervention' in the past!) so just sharing how mine behaves in case useful, without really understanding the relay diagram.

  7. Ok. Removed air flow meter plug (I think the right one) and still whirs.

Next step will be to remove hot start relay.

  8. remove hot start relay and normalise and i reckon all your issues will go away.

  9. I hope so!

Will be a good advert for making sure your relay is properly protected from the elements!

  10. Good advert for not needing one in my eyes. I really don't think one is needed if everything else is good

  11. Right, here goes. Let's get muddy!

    Report back shortly.

  12. He's stuck in the mud under his van.

  13. @pkrboo I could hug you.

    Appears to have done it!

Fuel pump now no longer operates when ignition is off.

Started the engine. Started fine. Black smoke to start (excess fuel) and then what I think is condensation (not white smoke!) after.

Need to take it for a test drive, but one step at a time :)

  14. Nearly was! So boggy here!

  15. nice one, i tke payment in beer!! lol

it also doesnt count as a break down in france as you never actually did break down, it just ran rough.

through that piece of Marmite relay in a hedge

  16. I'm gonna fit it to the T 4 and T 5 parked nearby..... Tee hee hee.
