Interior upgrade for my t2

  1. Hi nikkiwalker1984.
I am about to undertake the interior in my van. Could you please tell me where you got the silent coat from and how many sheets you ordered/needed?. I have already insulated the walls.
    Thank you.

  2. Hiya, yes I got it as a bundle pack from deadening.co.uk http://www.deadening.co.uk/products/campervan-sound-proofing-and-insualtion-kit
I imagine they are abit more pricey than other places but as I'm sure you can tell, this is all very new for me, and I got completely lost in the different types of insulation out there. Someone in my club recommended them and when I emailed Colin, he immediately directed me to the product best for my needs. The time (and frustration) saved was worth what little extra it might have cost!

I don't know if you'll need all of it tho if you've done your walls? it includes the dodo mat thermo insulation too.

Can I ask, how did you do your walls? Silent coat 50% coverage? Are you putting thermo matting on top?

  3. That's a good deal seen some packs of sc for £85 squid that wouldn't cover a seat

  4. That's reassuring. I've kind of come to the conclusion that you can't find out the cheaper/best ways of doing things until you've learnt the hard way first. I've learnt about products I didn't even know existed and if there's ever a next time (unlikely!)I feel like I'd know what to do better!!!

  5. Thank you for the link. I have used fibreglass with the tinfoil backing on it. I got it for free from a contractor at work who was installing a air con system.
I will use this above the cab area as well. It looks like the original stuff I took out. I just want to silent coat above the engine bay, floor and arches.

  6. Been wanting to do this for years on my van. Having emigrated to new zealand, i dont really need insulation, soundproofing needs doing though. I just cant believe the prices though.
My conclusion is: not to bother as any road/engine noise will drown out the wifes drone and the kids squabbling :)

I've happily driven men around for 12 years without sound insulation.
It's the current fad I think!

  8. True my westy has none .. it worries me with all the trapped moisture .. you can't do the front doors as water runs down them so there is always going to be road noise plus I like to sleep with a window cracked open so it's not big on my list

With all that glass and poptop canvas on the upper half of a bus is it really going to make much difference?

  10. Silentcoat sheets are worth doing I think as they can be put everywhere even on the inners of the doors and they have made a huge difference to my van. Have to say though my Westy had soundproofing behind the panels but I haven't put it back as most of it was full of animal eggs and droppings and I have concerns that the condensation in my van from living in UK will rot it from the inside

  11. Nikki, liking the look of your silent coat. As you say, so bewildering reading about all the options for sound proofing and insulation.

  12. * Warning * anyone with any VW knowledge don't bother reading this...unless you want a laugh! this is a post more for my records as hopefully it'll show me how far I've come in a few years when I look back!!

So the interior has had to take a back seat the last few weeks because after experiencing repeated flat batteries, then realising my battery was in poor condition hence installing a new battery, i developed a new problem.... my alternator warning light flashed on and off when I took it for a drive. My limited knowledge has taken me round the houses with diagnosis, partly cos it wasn't something obvious like the fan belt snapping so i assumed it was a problem with my installation of the battery.... advice from lovely people in the club made me think it might be poor connections? So I removed the new battery and yup, the connections were crusty and dirty....[IMG][IMG][IMG]

I learnt about the benefits of copper next and got a copper brush and copper grease to clean them up...very fiddly huh[IMG]

So, battery back in, i turned the ignition, it started first time (relief) but after idling for a few minutes the damn thing cut out/stalled and alternator light flashed on as it did so. This made me think that perhaps the reason my alt warning light flashed on when I took it for a drive the week before was cause it was about to stall (I think I'd been at a junction and the only reason it didn't stall was cause I habitually played the accelerator /brake game....)

Anyway, over the next week the 'problem' got worse....now it wouldn't even idle. The second I took my foot off accelerator the stupid bus stalled.

Time to get my multimeter out. Never used one before, still don't really know how to but another lovely friend from the club came over and we checked the resting voltage (12.5 I think it was) and the voltage when on was 14.3. A few more bits of help and advice later we established that my alternator was charging the battery fine and that the earth connection to the bus was good too. Conclusion: all the battery issues were a red herring. On a positive, I hadn't fcuked up the electrics!!!

So ....Turns out my carb has more than likely gone out of tune. Another lovely person from the club has been out to help me (I owe a lot of favours!). He said The choke was not coming on fully. So we have re set the choke (for my records: turned the 'thing' on the right side of the carb!) and turned the 5p size screw on the left side two thirds of a turn anti clockwise. It's better but I don't think we are fully there yet. But joy of joys, we can't warm it up fully as I appear to have a situation with my oil spraying/leaking everywhere (slight exaggeration I suppose - it's in the vicinity as per pic, all a tad damp). [IMG][IMG]

So we can't work out where the oil is coming from (other than the pipe which I was relieved to hear was meant to be hanging down like that- aka breather hose!).... but it also turns out my oil levels are too high so this could possibly be my fault (no change there!) and so I'm told the oil might be pushing out cause it has no where else to go!! Oops! hence next job is to degrease it all, do an oil change and replace all that oil kit stuff....and then top it up (not so high this time!) and see if It gets all damp with oil underneath again!!

Fingers crossed I can then take it for a test drive to see if my warning lights come on again!!! Yippee! Not!

  13. Right, back to the interior...I needed a break from learning about mechanical stuff.... today I have finished the thermal insulation (dodo matting)... great the way it sticks on top of the silent coat but abit fiddly to cut.... [IMG]

I removed the carpet on the cab ceiling and out fell a load of Christmas decorations!!! No joke! Some kind of weird insulation maybe?![IMG]

Took the ply off and I've insulated the cab ceiling too... [IMG]

I've also removed the carpet from along the edge of the pop top. Abit of surface rust here so wire brushed and think I'm going to paint rustoleum over it next...i guess it's a vulnerable area cause of the pop top...[IMG]

Not sure whether I might need new ply to line the ceiling and along the sides of the pop top...the old stuff is covered in sticky bits from where the carpet was stuck on...[IMG]

Next I'm off to get my underlay for the floor!!
