Interior to change or not to change

Discussion in 'Restorations' started by alexbloorino, Feb 13, 2019.

  1. Currently got the original Westfalia interior with sink, fixed seat behind drivers with 2 seat bed and tall cupboard. Although it’s nice and original a different layout would be better for me. Would I be crazy taking this out? How much would it be worth? It’s got a Subaru lump so keep original has gone already. Will post some pics later

  2. It`s your van , your choice

Just done mine and it`s how i wanted it . The wingers are usually people who have an idea for THE perfect van but seldom find what they want so moan about everyone elses efforts - it`ll be never be as good as their `idea` ...

Don`t give a toss what anyone else thinks - my van , my choice :p

(and most people respect that )

We lived in our Westy for 6 months, during in which time we realised they nearly got it right lol.
So we ripped it all out and started again.
    Chip now looks like a Westy....but isn't quite:thumbsup:

In saying that, what is the Westy conversion? Some of the early ones are rare and fetch good money so take it out carefully and be mindful that some modern bed systems are just not as good

  6. It’s out of a 72, I think it must be first of the late bays, it’s bit a crossover

  7. Have you got any pics ?

  9. What has been said so far.
    Your van, your choice!

My van was quite similar to yours when I got it. Late 72 (late front but some still some features), original interior, Subaru engine...
The interior didn't suit our needs so we took it out and sold what we could.

Regarding the cost, all the options exist. You can build it yourself from scratch for very cheap. But you can also find some high end interior for over £5000 (https://www.vanwurks.co.uk/product/...s/deluxe-classic-for-volkswagen-t2-bay-window). So it's really up to you.

We ended up going for some pre cut units because it wasn't much more expensive than buying the raw material and the guy was okay to do a few modifications to his template to fit our needs. It also saved us a lot of time. (the guy closed shop though)

  10. Lucky for me I was a carpenter for about 7 years so the interior doesn’t scare me half as much as the rest of it.

  11. If you`ll get better use from your bespoke set up then why not ??

Dunno how long you`ve had the van but it`s better to use what you have and decide how things could be improved . Just a suggestion ....

  12. Got it last year, used a few times, just feels really dark and cramped in there. Was going to go with a full length back seat and also maybe look at bench seat in the front (if possible)

  13. Possibly a tin top then ??
It`s a comprimise between cooking / storage and sleeping space , and as with most things you`ll have different ideas to other people but just go with what suits your needs . With mine i sacrificed half the cupboard storage for a slightly wider bed , half way between a 3/4 and full width ...

None of us are getting any younger you know
    (... or wiser .... :D )

  15. I decided I didn't want to spend any money on a new interior, so I just cut the Westfalia wardrobe down to just below window level, as per the photo, now a lot more light in the back. I have put a lid on the front three quarters means I have a bit more worktop space. P7080089 copy.JPG

If you’ve had the van a year and used it, then you’re probably getting an idea on what works and what doesn’t.... and if the original interior doesn’t feel right and you’re not fussed on keeping it all as it was in the 70s.... well you’ve got your answer. There’s folk out there who will be looking for original, so you make some money, they get an original interior, and you get the layout you want. Win win.
As @Lasty says, your van, your rules. We’re all different, which is what makes our buses unique to us. I think the wider bed is a biggie for most people, and if you’re looking at new, I hear good things about Rusty Lee (although not got one myself)
Do what you need to do to make the camper usable and enjoyable.

That’s nicely done. I found having the wardrobe there in a LHD was a PIA for vision when driving. I think if we’d have kept the bus we’d have ripped it out

  18. Thanks, lack of vision was the reason I cut it down, I need to finish the top off.

  19. So I must be a winger and a moaner !!!!.... Its no odds what you do as it is indeed your bus but in the long run it will devalue it and make it less attractive to certain buyers if and when you come to sell it .Of course it could also make it more attractive to certain buyers ...
I personally believe originality is where its at ....But you should get decent money for it as there are always people doing the opposite ...
