I have just watched a fab programme on PBS America. It’s a British programme about archaeologists digging out the WW1 trenches near the Messine Ridge in Belgium. V interesting. Proper bravery in both the Allied and German tunnel builders (as well as all the foot soldiers). When we went on our hols to Bruges a few years ago we went on a day coach trip around WW1 war graves. We visited Hill 60 too.
We have been round some of the cemeteries too. Including the huge one at Tyne Cot. Very moving places
One of the better documentaries Spent some time with a mate travelling around the WW1 battlefields , started off as a week long jolly in the van but two days into the trip the reality and enormity of what we trying to understand dawned on us . A very emotional trip , you have to go there , visit the battlefields, visit the memorials , visit the cemeteries to just get a basic understanding of the futility of the slaughter . A sobering moment was visiting Delville wood (aka devils wood) where just short of 800 allied soldiers were sent into the woodland , after 3 days of "vicious hand to hand fighting" only 27 walked out ..... Took the boys to Arras, this time last year, I agree, very moving. This was taken near to a modern day roundabout where there were 7, I think, VCs awarded within 100m of the original crossroads.
Totally agree , they still have massive respect of what the allies were fighting for . We , as the commonwealth didn`t really have to get involved but it was certainly seen as `the right thing to do` by committing allied forces as essentially the freedom of France and the low countries was in jeapody . Then it all kicked off again 20 odd years later ...
Very doable We stayed at Blaarmeersen camp site in Ghent, fabulous city and an easy drive to Pashendale, Tyne Cot and Ypres. Will probably revisit after the world gets straight again
We stayed in a camperstop in Ypres. Easy walk through a park into Ypres centre, very convenient for attending the last post ceremony in the evening.
