Installing 12v electrics

Discussion in 'Camper Conversions' started by simmysimpkins, Mar 26, 2017.

  1. Hi. I want to install 12v electrics to my t2. There's a nice space for the leisure battery in the engine bay.

But now I'm stuck. How's the best way to run the cables from the engine bay into the underside of the Rock and roll bed (where I want to fit a electric panel).

I've got the rear wheel arch (which I want to leave alone). There's tin ware behind the engine (not sure). Or should i go downwards , under the engine bay and up through the floor under the rear seat.

    Any suggestions?

    Regards Simon

  2. My leisure battery setup it tucked away under my rock and roll seat as it's a massive battery, we drilled a small hole in the wheel arch used a grommet and fed the cables through to the engine bay. Works a treat and keeps nicely topped up when running.

I didn't fit this myself, it was done by a mechanic mate who actually knows what he's doing though so can't claim to be an expert!

  3. Thanks for that John.

  4. If you fit the leisure battery in the left hand section of the engine bay just run feed through with a grommet .. you can get a complete split charging kit of fleebay instructions are really easy to follow.. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/191899407111

  5. Thanks Adam. We're do you suggest drilling the hole for the grommet. Behind the engine?

  6. my cables from my leisure battery go out through a grommet that's at the bottom of the spare wheel well to the fuse box under the seat. no drilling required as its already there.............

    Here you go simmysimpkins
Grommets in the holes & flexible conduit through the grommets to protect the wiring.
As wendygun says you can use the base of the wheel well (I fill mine up with stuff so that wasn't an option) or Westfalia drilled a hole by the wheel well & ran their cables down into the engine bay from there. CAREFUL with that option as there is a tank breather running in the firewall.

  8. Cheers guys. I will take the back seat out and look for the hole as my bus is a westfalia.

  9. Exactly what these guys say don't drill until you have a look first.. split side conduit is a good idea to take cabling through .. get one of these as well as your wiring kit I sent you the link for.. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252787073573

    ^^ I like that:thumbsup:
For a change it's a good priced junction box rated at a reasonable amperage with decent screw-down posts!

  13. @theBusmonkey .....
I've been looking and drilled a pilot hole and now stumped lol
How did you get through to the engine bay as I'm sure there's a void behind the inside picture you showed? Can you tell me how you got through to the engine bay mate please?

  14. The second photo theBusmonkey posted is from the engine bay.

Taking the NSR light cluster out will make it easier to see.

  15. Yeah I saw that, has he drilled a hole in either side then fed through then? I didn't want to start drilling big holes without asking first that was all?

  16. As far as I'm aware its a single panel.

  17. Single panel on either side of a void over wheel arch mate
