Inlet manifold boot replacement- Any tips?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Jasonm, Aug 10, 2011.

  1. Ive got myself a leak from the left hand side boot, I think I disturbed it fitting a exhaust at the weekend.. :(

Anyone got any comments on the job? Is it a biatch? Is it Ok? Is it engine out as suggested by Mr Haynes?
VWHeretige sells some natty red urethane replacements, anyone used these?
    Thanks for any comments ..

The urethane ones are good but I've never used the 'old' type.

You can replace them in situ bit it's a bit of a git.

You'd have to loosen the 'banana tubes' and the inlet manifold and wiggle. In doing that you may well damage the gaskets it they aren't in good nick so you may have to replace them.

  3. Cheers for the reply.. I may just get someone to do it... I dont mind having a go at most things, but its when things go wrong I start to get nervous...

  4. I did mine myself just the other day and it was a bit of a biatch to do, had the remove the studs that bolt the banana tubes to the engine casing, and remove the banana tubes altogether, loosening them was not enough as the two pipes (inlet manifold and banana tubes) are recessed into each other, this was the only way I could get the worn rubbers off.
