Indicators not indicating and battery light refusing to go out

  1. Hi, just putting everything back together after Lilly's spray but having problems with the indicators. Got the rest of the lights back but the indicators are dead. Indicator light on the dash is constantly on.

    Any ideas...

And while we are at it how do I remove the steering column just in case I need to trace wires.

Oh yea and the battery light is stopping on after starting. I presume this suggest that battery isn't charging but everything seems fine.

Plus side she did start first time after having the engine on a bench for two years :)

    Cheers

  2. Have you a multi meter? Check voltage across battery with engine off and on. Should see a difference in volts which will show if the battery is being charged.

  3. Do the hazard lights work?

  4. No, there's nothing happening :(

  5. I'm thinking if you've had the rear and front lights out you may have mixed up a wire in one of them, or most likely you've disturbed a ground wire and the system is getting power through the ground wires so they stay on. !!! Easy enough to do, recheck the wires in each corner.

  6. The indicators themselves are not stopping on, it's the indicator light on the dash that is stopping on.

  7. ^^ Do this first - it'll tell us whether the alternator/dynamo is working.

The indicator relay is under the fusebox along with the headlight dim/dip/flash relay. Pull each out in turn and give them a shake to ensure they're not full of water...

  8. Hi, just read the "how to" on using a multi-meter. Thought it might help lol.

I'll check it tomorrow, everything was working fine before it was removed but I guess that's always the way.

Relays shouldn't really have water in them. That was a problem before I had the new front on. I'll run a check over them with my new multi-meter skills and see wha that uncovers ;)

Any ideas on stripping the steering column to check the indicator switches or do you pull them out. They seem reluctant to come out

    Cheers

  9. What year is your van? There are at least two different types of steering column each of which has several types of switches...

  10. It's a '78 German import.

The latter part of that sentence always seems a little strange and obvious but the insurance company tells me there is a differance :/
