The picture seems to show a vacuum takeoff from the manifold going to the air cleaner flap (said connection is originally intended for the vacuum feed to a servo) , but it does OK for the air cleaner flap feed as well.
In which case the second carburettor hose with vacuum at idle can be blocked off, as it connects to the space below the throttle butterfly, at the same pressure as the brake booster hose takeoff.

  2. Have you checked this? My 2L has the dizzy 180' out from a previous rebuild. Not an issue once you realise but a bugger when you don't know and are trying to get it to run right.

    Good luck!

  3. Have measured the pulley, it's about 178mm dia with the V notch 12.5mm to right of centre of dimple.
You say the distributor notch is quite often in that location on later distributors, does that mean it's correct if number 1 is at TDC firing? So no need to move about?
    Cheers, David

  4. My distributor.

  5. I can't see the pictures properly until I can get onto a proper computer screen. But if the last part of the bottom number is 205L then that is the correct distributor for an AS engine.

  6. Thats about right for 7.5deg.

Yes if it all lines up that is correct.

  7. Great, thanks. Pic of slot in engine for distributor drive. Have changed vacuum over to left side.
May be a little time though to sort as I seem to have a knackered thread on number 1 plug, keeps turning even by hand. Will try and get a look with a phone camera. Have found that the scratched marks in various places show tdc a little to the right of dimple, confirmed with a stiff paper straw down number 1 cylinder. Cheers. David

  8. Update. Now looks like number 1 spark plug hole only has a couple of threads at the very bottom, s'pose it's the best time to find out!!! So distributor position secondary now.
Advice on how to proceed please, new post?

Sounds like you need to strip the head off, check for cracks, and fit a helicoil / timesert.

  10. As above, cylinder head off to fix it.

  11. Cheers, so time to sort out 12 years of other jobs I've been putting off then!
Does the head number need to match exactly if cracked? Have seen last numbers 173A for sale.

  12. Best to get the head off first and see what's happening. Spark plug threads may be repairable.

  13. Ta. Time to drop engine for first time! On drive!!

  14. Just follow your nose. Taking a type 1 out isn't that hard. You'll find planty of other jobs that need doing ;)

  15. Got used to the puddle of oil!!

  16. Get rid of that! Your engine will be oil-leak free
