Right, I have been trying to get the barrel out without taking the column off but am not sure I have even found the hole let alone managed to get the barrel out. So I have admired defeat and am going to take the column off. Are there any other jobs I should do whilst I have the column off? Thanks
I'd advise carry on prodding. The hole is in the corner of a squarish indentation which leads your prodder to it. I had to file my coat hanger down a bit, coat hangers aren't all the same. What @Dubs said earlier is also my experience. Another thing is your prodder itself can be locking the barrel in place. Push the spring clip, pull the barrel to start the clip past it's obstruction, keep pulling enough to keep it from slipping back while letting up on the prodding pressure. When it comes out you won't be trying very hard or aware you're doing anything different. One of those jobs like feeding a cab door locking mechanism into the door. Seems impossible then just slides in.
Thanks for your responses. I did some more wriggling around and used a mole grip and managed to get the barrel out. I will still need to take the column off at some point, but can now put this off a little bit.
