Ignition key barrel

  1. So I’m trying to get the above out of its housing using the bent wire technique I got told about but I just can’t get it out...am I missing something or do I just need to keep trying ?? It’s a 72 crossover btw
    Cheers Rich

  2. You have to have the key turned to ignition position

  4. Did it have a hole or did you have to drill it out?

It’s quite troublesome to find and you need to really pull hard on the bent wire, to push the spring in. the only thing I found that was able was a bent coat hanger.

    Put some photos up

^ this. It takes a good strong coat hanger wire to do it.
I smashed up one of my wife's small makeup mirrors and dropped a shard behind the barrel so I could at least see what I was doing.

  7. The wire I’m using doesn’t seem to get enough purchase on it. I’ll find a metal hanger and try that instead. I didn’t want to go down the route of drilling a hole tbh!

No drilling required. No mirror required, the wire seems to find the hole quite easily I found.

  10. Late models didn't always have the hole, just a casting mark where to drill a hole.

I tried to do this a couple of years ago on my 73 bay . I bought a cheap tiny usb camera that plugged into my phone . I was able to clearly see the relevant hole to push wire into but despite 3 days of trying all sorts I reverted to brute force and writhed the thing out using pipe wrench . Did a tiny amount of damage and all went back together ok .

  15. Its an absolute bugger.
Presume you have taken the grub screws out first too?

Mine is a crossdresser too, and had a hole

  16. Er grub screw??! The one much further down the housing? ..if so then no it’s still in thought it was too far away

Dont drop the grub screw as mine took about 2 hours to find. On earlier columns this screw has a 'nose' on it with no thread poking into the lock, so the replacement would have taken me a while to make from a bolt using a hacksaw and a fine file.

  18. Take the steering column off!
