I suspect I may regret this.....

  1. Well this morning I have sold my modern car (a very dull but very practical Skoda estate).

This leaves us with my wife's car (a '71 beetle) and the van. They have a combined age of 88, and neither are currently running properly....

We can't justify having 3 cars, but neither of us would sell our air-cooled VW.

Not sure this is going to work, but we'll see!

I'm considering getting rid of our daily and replacing with a beetle, but funds don't really allow atm. Let us know how it goes.

  3. I would've sold the beetle, kept the van for some air cooled fun and kept the skoda for daily use.

Now you've sold the skoda, you may well need to spend some of the proceeds on both beetle and van to keep them running.

  4. No, I'll need to spend far more than that!!

  5. I've used my bay as a daily for over 7 years

  6. I think that many problems with these old cars is not using them enough.

  8. I suppose it would pressure you a bit to fix up both beetle and van and then use them every day which we all know is the most important thing with these old classics.

  9. People drove these 'old' cars daily when they first arrived on our roads, if its well maintained and 100% I don't see an issue. You may drive slower and need to be a bit more aware but its totally fine.

I thought owning a newer modern car would be better. My 2003 TDi has cost me £2500 in the last 8 months to keep on the road. If I put that into my bus it would be a great daily.

    Don't worry

I was using the bay as a daily until i broke my arm last week... although i know i need to do a winter respray either this year or next. this needs a replacement daily for which i have considered a beetle (possibly a 1302 for future development), a caddy van, a silly 4x4, an MX5... all relatively silly ideas, but you only live once :)

  13. It's probably the best thing you've ever done.
Who needs a crap, white goods style daily? Use your Volkswagens and if you think you need something bigger or faster, just buy one for a couple of hundred pounds off ebay & flog it on again when you're finished with it. There is no need for intelligent people to get sucked into the whole, 'I've got to have something modern & ostensibly reliable for £179 a month', when there are people out there practically giving away perfectly useable cars in need of a few pounds spending on their motors at MOT time.
I blame the scrappage & refer you to a lad whose Corsa needed £200 to pass an MOT, he took it to Looms, walked out with £12, spent £15 on a taxi to a garage where he signed up for £200 a month for the rest of his life. A life in which he will never be burdened by having to actually take responsibility for owning a motor car of his own again. What do they teach them at school these days?

This exactly. I bought our little run around for £300 and it's been going for a year or so. I've spent a bit on it but it's been fine.

However well you look after a run of the mill car it devalues. Your Classics go up. Best if you don't have long commutes, the fuel is a killer.

  17. Until January I was commuting 300 miles a week in my petrol T25 - fuel bill was eye watering but doing a total costing was still cheaper overall than running another car.

No commute now though which makes this madness more achievable!

I had a golf TDI that did minimum 60 mpg. Bus did 20. A 25 mile round trip plus cold engine trips out for lunch and parts was costing £50 a week in the van. More like £15 in the car. Multiply by 50 weeks is £2.5k versus £750. It was actually much worse than that, I was filling the van three times every 2 weeks, or the car more like once month.

  20. Those costings do put the beetle and van running costs into perspective. What would concern me also is that both vehicles are needing work (money) as neither are running properly.

So the money gained from the skoda sale would go to sort out the beetle and van, perhaps.

How are you both getting to work now?

Hopefully you would get both sorted and drive them which would be better for them.
