How to Prep Behind the Vents

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Owen Snell, Jan 10, 2012.

  1. The idiot who brown primered my van before I bought it didn't mask off the rear vents, so behind the vent has lots of brown primer mixed with dust and crud. How best to get in to prep this area so I can get some white paint back on it without it looking s**t at the end of the process?

  3. WHS ^^

I made an extension out of some flexy hose and a bit of small bore copper pipe to get right in close using one of the cheap shot blaster guns you can buy.

I think theres a few pics on my resto thread and of the end result

  4. Jenolite (gel) on a skinny brush with plenty of newspaper below the intake to catch the drips. A vile job to do but you can end up with a paintable surface.

  5. no decent bodyshop would use paint strippers or any thing like that as your asking for paint reactions in the future as it sneeks into all the nooks and cranies and you cant get it back out

  6. A previous owner of my van painted white through the vents straight on top of the original colour(sage green), without using any etch or the like resulting in big chunks of white flaking off revealing green underneath! It looks shocking.
Would you be able to shot blast it with the engine still in?

Been leaving this for a while myself, as my early efforts of using sanding paper taped to a length of bar failed,

#I've seen loads of buses with paint inside the vents flaking and peeling as its such a Illegitimate child place to get to.

  14. Really interesting thread this, as I've always wondered how the pros do it too. My bus was recently painted, vents done, the lot. I'll have to ask the paint shop how they did it.

  16. Cut the corners off. It's the only way...
Seriously, if you can smooth it down a bit, Rustoleum mixed to Pastel White is pretty good for brush-painting through the slots.
