HOW TO: Fit an eberspacher heater

  1. As its getting to the time of year that it could you get cold overnight when camping i though i'd repost some info abotu fitting an eberspacher heater to your camper.

Heres my Eberspacher B1L heater from 1981. Cost me £100 and gives out 1700Watts of heat.

I decided to mount it in the small side seat in my westfalia so checked to see if the heat outlet would fit:

As the burner inlet and exhaust pass through the floor of the van i first made sure there was nothing underneath that would interfere with the pipe.

I marked out where the crossmember was under the floor so i could see where the heaters base would fit:

After taking some careful measurements i found that the pipes would just clear the crossmember. :)

As the heater shouldn't sit on the wooden floor i needed to cut a square of plywood out to expose the metal underneath.

I then used the heaters baseplate to mark the holes for the mounting bolts and inlet and outlet pipes:

They just clear the crossmember after a slight bit of notching. ;D

I test drilled a hole in a sheet of wood to see if the holesaw i had was the right size:

Before drilling the hole in the seat base and popping in the vent (taken from an unsuspecting alfa romeo).

Heater nicely bolted down, ECU mounted to the side of the cupboard and the wiring coiled up.

I built a little partition to stop any tools etc from sliding into the heater and damaging it:

  2. The exhaust pipe exits through the floor and is clipped to the inner sill on mine.

Plans include adding a small silencer to it as it sounds like a jet aircraft taking off. ;D
Point the exhaust pipe towards the opposite side of the van from the sliding door so you don't fill your awning with exhaust fumes.

The inlet hose on mine is just a length of 15mm diameter car heater hose and heads towards the sliding door side of the van so the heater doesn't inhale its own exhaust fumes.

The fuel supply is T'd into the vans fuel pipe just under the tank:

runs through a separate fuel filter:

before reaching the fuel pump and then going to the heater:

I've got most Eberspacher/Webasto heater manuals and installation/operating instructions as PDF files. If anyone needs them PM me your email address (and say what model heater you have ;) ) and i'll send you it.

  5. Nice work fella.
I want to get something like this in future I didn't really understand how they worked before.

    K+ to you

  6. They are pretty simple things really. Propex is the same sort of thing just running gas not petrol/diesel.
