How to...Fit a 2 post pressure sender gauge to type 4 engine

The aperture for the sender on the type 4 tinware is too small, so you either have to cut the tin or make some form of adaptor pipe. These used to be available but no more, or at least after extensive searching I've been unable to locate one.

In order to get the extension required without cutting the tinware use a Type 2 flexible brake hose. You need a male to male M10 X 1 adaptor for the pipe to engine. I got this from a motor factors for £2. Attach the sender to the other end. As its a rubber hose you have to earth the sender to the van. I used a spare metal bracket which is used for holding the HT leads to the block on a type 4 engine, but anything will do. The brake hose fitting has the correct end fittings and provides the right amount of extension for the pressure sender without the chance of a 'homebrew' kit leaking.

You can then mount the sender onto the overhead cylinder tin anywhere so long as it is earthed to the van.

I bought a cheap pod from Halfords as a temp fixture for the gauge. The gauge is earthed directly to the dash board metalwork and is live on the same circuit as the wipers.

  2. I've since been told that the flexible hose will degrade after exposure to oil. Mines still fitted but i've been unable to verify this. I'm having a copper one made up using brake fittings just in case

  3. I purchased a stainless steel braided hose and fittings from Ebay. Good product, fitted easily and meant I could use a single pole oil sender unit with the OEM oil pressure switch still fitted.
I'll post a few pictures later
