How reliable has your Pertronix electronic ignition been?

  2. UPDATE ON FRIENDS PROBLEM, Yes it was a dead Pertronix flamethrower coil and module ok. He has put back on his old bosch coil and now runs like a finely tuned sowing machine! Nb the new blue Bosch coils for sale in usual places are made in Brazil!!!

  3. I don’t think much Bosch stuff is made in Germany anymore.

Their washing machines and dish washers are built in Poland according to the repair engineer who regularly visits my house.

Do I win a prize? Flamethrower coils are unnecessary and unreliable.
Where did you expect them to be made?

  5. Brazilian coils are fine

  6. Like the Massey Ferguson Seedmaster 2000? Great piece of kit

  7. I have had electronic ignition on the bay of lasting joy at some pointnin the past, although I have no idea what brand it was.
All I do know is that it turned out to be made from cheese and was upgraded* to points & whatsits.
If it turns out that there's now a half decent version available that will last longer than the journey to the corner shop for fags & back,
I may be tempted to give it a whirl.

  10. Since this post was 4 years ago now, any updates on Petronix reliability?
I've just fitted Petronix 3 with the flame thrower coil too, and wondering if it's necessary to keep a spare coil in my spares kit!

  11. I have heard bad stories about the Pertronix coils, but 123 electronic ignition folk actually recommend that coil is used with their distributors.

Two Pertronix modules both the standard versions, all good so far; the Bug's is 6 years old now.

I dont think there is a problem with Pertronix coils more the heat soak from a hot engine sometimes affecting the electronic modules.

  13. I’ve had my Pertronix for just over 6 years and it gets me home

It gets me home, it gets me home
    Pertronix gets me home
It gets me home ….. Pertronix
    Pertronix gets me home

Back on points. Wanted it to work, loved the idea of Pertronix but sadly now don't trust it.
Our dissy is a bit worn, so Pertronix was the answer, but we must have had a bad one. It was fine for 2 or 3 years then we got an odd intermittent total loss of power for a split second.
Reverted to the old ponts and condenser and everythings fine again.
Go for it, but carry plan B

  16. Had pertronix for 7 years on my type 4 engine. Never missed a beat

Type 1 engine with a Petronix 1 module in a genuine Bosch SVDA dizzy, all fine and dandy so far (about 2 years) …..but I do think carrying a spare pre-timed / clamped dizzy with points is a good idea just in case (and I must get around to this!)

  18. I bought a new 009 back in '93 ( before I knew any better ! ) and fitted an 'original' Pertronix about '97 which was faultless for the 15 years or so I ran it . I only changed the 009 setup to try an accuspark SVDA which transformed the pick up so stayed on for a few years until I tried a proper Bosch SVDA with an 80s Lumenition kit which again was a revelation so that's on at the moment...
Apparently the earlier Pertronix units were very reliable and manufactured in the USA , now it's China...
