How much play in rear wheel bearings should there be

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by seanlithman, May 1, 2019.

  1. jacked up the van to adjust my rear brakes thought may as well check my wheels so grabbed wheel at 12 & 6 o’clock and gave it a wiggle it seemed to move quite a bit same at 3 & 9.same on the other wheel
Should there be any play/ movement ? If so how much is acceptable?
    Thanks in anticipation

  2. Take it for a drive then try them , they are parallel rollers on back not like taper rollers . Ps if still slack then maybe get some more , but don’t buy cheap .

  3. If getting mot , always take it for a good run first , some mot peeps don’t know they need to warm up .

It shouldnt wobble a lot. New bearings start off with undetectable wobble and just gradually get worse.

Its hard work replacing them DIY but possible. The worst part is loosening the big hub nut, the rest is precision use of a 1kg club hammer and various makeshift precision tools.

.. it has been done in a field at Techenders (I was too hungover to do anything except offer advice) and I have done them myself on the driveway.

  5. There is a lot less movement when the hand brake is on! Would they indicate that it’s not the bearings?
I think I need to compare mine to another bus see if the movement is similar or mine much more

Do so, if only to put your mind at rest. They're called a C3 bearing and are designed to have a bit of clearance. As @Barneyrubble does, I always run the bus a bit before an MOT for this very reason. We got an advisory despite that this year...

Had advisory's on my rear wheel bearings in the last two years ...took Barn's advice about running it to warm up bearings to lesson the play ......sure enough passed OK ...even asked about play in bearings , He said fine .
And it was the same examiner .
