How much for a service?

  1. Just been quoted 225 plus vat for a service on my 79 2.0 bus. Just wondering is that a reasonable price. Thanks

what are they calling a service? parts included? @zed that seems steep to me.

  3. Depends on whats included, oil, Filter, plugs, points, leads, distributor cap, rotor arm, fan belt, fuel filter, air filter, fuel pipe. If its all that its cheap :D

Also depends on where you are in the country?

  7. Just ask if when they set the valve clearences ,are they doing it with the engine stone cold , that is not moved from your house to the garage and then to the workshop , it has to be done with the engine cold , so that would require overnight at there place ,

    just saying

    Sounds expensive to me.
It only takes a couple of hours to do it yourself...

  11. Really does depend on what's included in that service...

If it was coming in I'd generally assess what needs replacing... But as an unknown you'd have to factor it as a full service and tune...

    So parts would be:
    Plugs
    Leads
    Points
    Condensor
    Cap
    Rotor arm
    Panel filter
    Oil filter
    Rocker cover gaskets
    Oil
    Fuel filter
    Fan belt

Service should then be swapping all of the above parts in, checking tappet gaps or resetting hydro tappets.
Timing the engine and balancing the carbs...

    Then there's your diligence checks..
    Fuel lines
    Brakes and brake lines
    Engine bay electrics
    And lights

So the pricing might not be too far off, as 2hrs labour is going to be £80 or there abouts

I've never known a service include carb balancing or anything else you don't specifically ask for.
Buy the bits, bring them to Tekenders, and someone will show you how to do it yourself. It really is easy!

  13. £80 for two hrs is that all ,does that include tea break . Good job its not legal :D

  14. dont forget to factor in the "oh before you go bud , you might need a new engine now ";)

    I don't charge anywhere near £225, or VAT. :D
Depends on their overheads, where you are in the country and if they're trying to get somewhere in life, or happy treading water. ;)
I'd balance carbs if they were out of balance, I'd tune carb if obviously wrong. It would be a bit rude not too! I ask how it's running etc.
There's a limit though, if it's not straightforward it becomes an additional job.

  16. Yup a rusty one

  17. sorry bit of a vague question, shows my inexperience. When I find out what it includes il post it up here, it was a garage in West London
