How much foam? And what type

Discussion in 'Camper Conversions' started by Rixy, Apr 10, 2016.

  1. Hallo again? I've decided I'm not going to bother with a steel frames bed, and I'm going to figure out and rebuild my current westy bed into a full width bed

Question is, how much foam do I need, and in what sizes to complete a full width bed?

Cushion, backrest and engine bay bit.

Also, what type of foam, and what size and thickness? Can anyone help me as I need to get it all ordered. Doing a wedding in the van for a mate in a month or so, and need it built and trimmed by then......

Rear: 125 (119 at the short point) x 90 cms
    Seat: 139 x 55 cms
    Back: 139 x 45 cms

  4. Thanks bud much appreciated.

  5. If they are normal westy hinges no only 3" foam will fit, if they are continental hinges then yes 4" foam.

If it is for more comfort sleeping get a mattress topper?

@Rixy As it's a custom bed with unknown hinges you'll need to build up the bed first.
I linked you to my old build thread where in some pics I showed how I'd chopped up some old foam to check seat heights.

The back & base foam height will depend on 2 things

    a) the difference in height (if any) of the base boards (with the bed laid flat) and the over engine corrugated metal work.
    b) the distance between the parts of the hinges that the base boards bolt to. ie the span of the hinge.

Late Westy hinges & modern copies do not spread as wide as the earlier hinges therefore the foam has to be thinner. Early hinges have a wider span therefore thick foam can be used.
The over engine cushion thickness will simply be the difference in height between the metal & the top of the main foams when the bed is laid flat.

Our seat cushion thickness is a tad under 5 inches, the rear is a tad under 4. Later hinges use 4 & 3 I think ( @Dicky )?? Some beds use the same all through with as thin as 3 in some cases.

  8. Mine's a 78 westy, 75mm foam for the seat:

Anything fatter wouldn't have fitted.. but as above, best to build the bed first then do your measurements.

  9. If you build your bed with the upper side of the bedboards level with the over-engine deck then as long as you use the right thickness iot will all be the same. read my build thread and @theBusmonkey s thread as above. as you have unknown hinges then I suggest you get the mechanism and timber correct first or it just wont be right. on all factory Westy beds the seat foam is thicker than the rear deck foam. I decided to make mine the same height. On late westys the seat foam I believe is around three inches which means the rearmost cushion is even thinner. I made mine using 4 inch foam throughout. read the thread, its all there!

  10. incidentally as I say above re your hinges. a picture of the other one may solve the mystery.
