Holes where the spare wheel bracket used to be.

  1. Advice please - I want to put an original vw badge on the front - is it just a case of welding up the old holes left by the front wheel bracket and drilling new one for the new badge? I've seen the guide for where new holes should be drilled on the Ratwell resto site.
    Cheers
    Pete.

Just out of interest...where are you putting the spare wheel?
Mines on the front and I've thought in the past of taking of...only I keep the gas bottles in the spare wheel cupboard.

  3. Can I have your holes, please? I want to move my spare wheel out of the well at the back but my front panel has no holes. I already have a bracket, just no way of mounting it yet.

  4. I’ve got some genuine Westfalia 8mm holes. PM if you’re interested.

  5. Mines a Devon. I'm not sure westfalia holes will fit or look right.

I was lucky and managed to hide the badge over the holes of the spare wheel bracket .

  8. You want to stick with Devon holes if you can, they'll be original and far cheaper!

  9. Yeah, I thought the same, but I just can't find them anywhere. They aren't in any parts catalogues, but I think that is because they are not vw factory fittings.

  10. If they’re genuine Devon, they won’t fit right anyway. I had to modify some German holes to fix my roof.

  11. HAHA....The spray painter asked me to find out, so I guess it's just a case of welding them up and making sure you don't drill into the existing welds/holes when you put the new badge on?
Day - Gonna keep my s'wheel in the wheel cupboard - my gas bottle is in the middle cupboard.

    You do right..

  13. Many years ago I had a box full of Westfalia holes, if only I'd kept them :(

Do you need RHD or LHD?

  16. Might not be very practical if you get a puncture, but there is a weight saving benefit i guess..

    Noooooo.
Devon cut their holes with a spoon once they’d left the factory.
You want the factory Westfalia ones.

My spare wheel carrier must be a proper Devon . The big bolts holding the spare wheel on are Imperial and really annoying because not M14 ....dont lose the nuts..

  19. Weld the holes up and use trim tape to stick the badge on.

  20. Make sure whoever does the paint checks the front panel around the holes. The weight of the spare wheel can distort the area where the bracket sits - you don't notice it with the wheel on, so you can end up with a welded/filled and painted front panel that isn't quite in shape.
