Hob top coffee brewing thingy question?

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Robo, Mar 7, 2016.

  1. I have a machine at home it makes a lovely brew but it's a real faff, I have seen a few fellow tlb'ers with the hob top Brewers but I have never used one!

If you've got one what's it called, how do they work & are they good?

  2. One of these beasts?

    Cafetiere.
Proverbial peice of to use. Water in the bottom chamber, grounds in the middle. Add fire and hey presto, Brain Food.

  3. That's the kiddy, are they still called a cafetière? I reckon hob top brewing thingy has a better ring to it

    Do you use one?

  4. i've got one and use it at home, but you should take a look at one in the flesh so you can see the size. I think the cup size is Expresso cup size, so a three cup doesn't give you a very big cup. I also have a stainless cafetiere for use in the camper ... you know the thing with a mesh plunger.

  5. Im the only one who drinks coffee & Mrs Robo buys cheap caffeine free crubbish for home (she's trying to look after my blood pressure) it works as I've stopped drinking coffee at home!

I want something that will brew me a nice cuppa joe either at home or away, enough to make me a mug full at a time so after some feedback from others who may already do the same!

Ideally I don't want to boil the kettle & then brew in a separate cafetière if there's something that will do both!

  6. Well the thing that Pony has pictured will do that for you. Just need to check volume of liquid as there are different sizes.

  7. You say you have one of these? How do they work though as I've never used or seen one in action!

What you want is an Atomic - stove top coffee with a steaming wand for quality lattes ;) . I've got one that gets used daily, camping or at home... and maybe another, older one, looking very pretty on display  rps20160307_222503_405.jpg

I use one of those moka express jobbies. They are ace. The single cup one may be difficult to balance on your hob ( was gonna say "ring" fnar fnar...) but you can get bigger ones. As said before, easy to use, and I love the smell and the noise they make when the coffee is bubbling up into the top .

Unscrew the top n bottom sections. Cold water in bottom section, and put desired amount of ground coffe in the metal filter thingy that sits in the bottom section. Screw top n bottom back together. Pop on the heat. A few minutes later the boiled water will have percolated through the coffee grounds into the top. Lovely piping hot cup of Joe.

I love mine... there aren't many gadgets Mrs Moo approves of me buying, but even she agrees it was worth every penny.
And that bloke in the video you posted is the very guy that got me hooked and sold me my first Atomic ;)

Save your money. Buy a Moka Express and an Aerolatte frother for a fraction of the price and get pretty much the same result
