Hmmm get a bike licence or not??

  1. Hi all, for some time now I have been considering getting a bike licence and then some kind of bobber / chopper bike.

But I'm 35 with 3 kids, have never ridden a motorbike before, and I have been know to be a bit of a phase monkey. The only "phase" that's ever stuck is my love and ownership of VW's since the age of 12.

Question is get a bike licence or not? It appeals to me because it's something new and not as big as another bug or bus to mess with in the garage. And I like the idea of riding a hot roddy bike round the country roads in the summer evenings.

Anyone else been at the same cross road? What did you do?

I took mine about 16 yrs ago, mainly spurred on by my younger brother (who didn't take his stabilisers off his push bike til he was about 10!) passing his :)
I sold my bike about 9 yrs ago when I moved to Spain but am glad I've got my licence as still fancy another bike :)

  5. i have mine ,it will always come in useful ,just in case...:D

  6. Go for - wish I'd done mine as a lad - but appreciate that modern bikes are projectiles and not like your Dad's old BSA Bantam...

  7. Do it! It's the most amazing feeling to ride and you won't regret it!

  8. I'd say do it, although be aware of the pros and cons
+ they are bloody good fun
+ it won't take over your life
+ it does not have to be expensive
+ you will join a new club and meet new people

    - crashing hurts (it really really hurts) if your lucky :-(
    - all other road users

I've ridden for years and have gone all over Europe and met some great people some of whom have become friends for life

  9. Don't do it. Especially with having three kids. Sorry to be on a downer but my cousin was killed on is bike two weeks before first child was born and I have a few friends that have given up because the roads are too dangerous. Bikes make up 1% of traffic in UK but 20% of all road user deaths.

I have a bike licence including advance and until my late 20s i never had a car
I sold my last bike a 3 years ago as the roads have got so dangerous with car drivers just not paying attention and i was just not enjoying it

  11. There's nothing like riding a bike, you won't regret doing it. Attitude is everything - really really pay attention to other road users all of the time, or one of them will get you.

I love bikes and have had loads over the years, not had one for about 10 years now, last one was a VFR750 and I loved it. However there's no way I'd ever get another road bike there's just too much traffic on the roads, also mates that have got bikes hardly use them as it's just too much hassle getting kitted up to go out, hot summer day full face helmet and leathers! You don't just jump on them and ride.
I did go on a Yamaha off road day last year in deepest darkest Wales and that was fab and I was very tempted but I'll stay fitter on the mountainbike :)
Having said that its your choice and if it's something you have to get out of your system just take care and do it properly, best of luck whatever you decide.

    Agree totally .
I`ve had a variety of bikes since the early `80s , raced for (too many !!) years and had great times .
I sold my `Old faithful` Bonnie after 30 years ownership last year for the simple reason road riding has become a lottery . No matter how safely YOU ride there`s always some idiot not giving a toss .
Go for it - if that`s what you want , it`s a great buzz , but be very aware of the consequences if it all goes wrong ....

  16. I too was half tempted this year havnt riden a motorbike for over 20 yrs but i have decided against it its bad enough driving a gert masive silver T5 LWB other drivers seem to have a problem seeing it. Think riding my push bike to work some days is bad enough.

But not all the blame should be put on car drivers there are some right knob riders out there. Pulling out in front off you and overtaking in the town cutting you up at traffic light, going straight across in the wrong lane.

A few years ago going down the A303 a motorbike decide to overtake me going through a village mis judged his pulling in front off me and ploughed into the drivers door. The draft thing was if he waited for two minutes he would have been back on the duel carriageway.

I've got three kids and a motorbike so I'm bound to say go for it...I love it. But get the best training you can, and do IAM and/or RoSPA. And yes, everyone else on the road is out to get you!
