  1. Hi there

I’ve recently joined the forum having purchased a 1979 Devon camper at the end of last year.

Super excited to fulfil a longtime dream of owning one, and driving it brings a smile to my face every time. sadly the first long drive was on a cold January day and I discovered the heaters were not working. At all!! It was a chilly experience.

I’ve been looking into it and found several common problems- flapper cables not adjusted, gaps between connections etc.

One thing I’m wondering, should there be a gasket between the heat exchanger and the riser pipe, and between the riser pipe and the flapper box? None were fitted so it’s reliant on the metal to metal fitment and a jubilee clip. I feel like a gasket would help seal the joint even more but I don’t know if this is correct.

    any help welcome.

and glad to be part of the community

Just metal to metal , may help to seal any small gaps though

    Hi welcome along.

Also check the tubes, the joins. If they're not....insulate them may help too.

  6. Thanks for the info. I’ll be going through the whole system once the rain stops and be sure to insulate and check for gaps.

I’m sure I’ll get it fixed just as the weather warms up!

  7. Welcome! As the others have said make certain it's air tight. OE heat exchangers are usually better than aftermarket, more fins inside :)

Hi, no heating in mine either, being from California PO probably wasn’t bothered. I’ve no airflow into the cab. Checked everything except from the flapper box.

Was planning on this this weekend.

Ah well, you’re straight in there!!!:burp:welcome

Hello and welcome. I find a thick jumper helps, I’m still impressed by someone on here who said they’d driven wearing snow board shorts whilst their partner was actually in a sleeping bag in the passenger seat :)

  10. I like the sleeping bag idea

my last journey involved multiple thermals, coats jumpers, gloves and hats. I’m just glad I didn’t have to go on twisty roads as I’m not sure I could move enough to steer

make sure the heating levers are the right way. I drove mine to Techenders on a flipping freezing night last April and was then told I’d got the levers the wrong way so the front flaps were open  no wonder I was so cold!

    Welcome.

There are plenty of threads on here about the heating system and how to get it working. Most are just trying to say, keep to the original design and parts if possible, make it as airtight as is humanly possible , check for corroded tubes inside the heat exchangers and oil from head covers dripping onto them to eliminate smells in the cab and insulate the whole system. Believe me it works well then

  20. Welcome from Hounslow, I'm just happy I've got the heating working enough to demist the screen, if there's airflow but little heat check all the pipes are insulated, if no airflow it's time to look for the leaks, blockages and holes in the heat exchangers and don't forget the horrible pipes from the fan housing to the exchangers. When I fitted stainless exhaust had to rerun the pipes and it worked much better, the wife only puts two pairs of trousers on for a long run:)
