  1. Hi, currently got mine on Gumtree if you are interested, probably too far for you though, I am up in Scotland, I can attach a link on here when I work out how to. If you want you can PM me and I can send some pictures. Are you looking for one ready to go or looking for a project? Mine runs, starts first time (after a few turns) MOTd till August, tax exempt, underside sound, body work needs some attention and there is only the rock n roll bed in the back, everything else inside has been stripped out.

  2. You missed the bit where you meet new and interesting people when your broken down and how you can strike up a friendly banter with the the recovery service.

  3. You didn't mention the awful fuel consumption and how slow these things are ... or that the new parts you buy from the various specialist online providers are cheap Chinese copies of the real things, they never fit and if they do they fail in a couple of weeks. Then there is the issue of trying to find someone reliable to work on it!

  11. If you have young children & buy a ‘project’, they will be at Uni by the time it’s finished. You will also be £20k lighter by then but the one advantage I found is that you will have a job at a VW garage with no heating 40 miles from home earning £150 a week for a 60 hour shift

  12. Just wondering if the book has arrived I sent you? if so hope its helped.

If you still want to buy one after reading this thread...:D

Take someone with you that knows what’s what when you go to look at one

If you don’t mind having a go yourself , happy to get yourself under the bus and get down and dirty or can afford to pay someone local to do all the dirty work yourself go for it .

if not, go for something newer and have ( hopefully - but not guaranteed) less hassle .

Some bloody funny replies on here.

When I bought mine it was for weekends to Devon and Yorkshire Dales, both fair journeys from here.

    My heart said T2.
    My head said T4 Tdi.

    I bought a T2.

Sometimes I wish I’d bought the T4. But mostly I don’t. The bus has been a part of my life for 16 years.

I don’t have the time or skills, nor patience or inclination to do large jobs, I’d have to give up too many other things for that, but I’ve spent plenty of time doing plenty of things on it. And plenty of money paying other people to do often bad work on it, and more for others to put that work right.
Excuse the pun but that’s the price you pay for not doing stuff yourself.

The investment over time has overtaken the market value now but add 16 years of ownership and cheap trips away, a fab day van for biking and beach trips, a good base for weekends and longer (for me that’s one or two occupants), something that makes me smile every time I drive it, and over time market value increases enough to make it offset maintenance and repairs to an acceptable degree.
And I’ve met plenty of people and stayed at plenty of ace spots like cliff tops and National Park land and fields and car parks and river sides and forests that I wouldn’t have had the chance to without something similar.

So, as many have said it also depends on what you want from it and how you’ll manage the upkeep if you buy old, or whether you’ll always regret it if you buy newer.

I was lucky in that it was only the second one I looked at, especially as I’d not even researched the interiors or conversion types at all beforehand. I knew enough things to avoid and did a lot of rapid research before buying though and it worked out well as much by chance as anything.

If I were looking now I might look at some early T25s (heresy I know) as the round headlight look has grown on me and a leap forward in interior camper layout and facilities (in my opinion) and more modern engine options all appeal, although ‘80s/‘90s seat coverings are pretty hideous you can always get some Westy check cloth if that’s your thing (I wish my Westy had that!).

But I really love the bus I have and if it came down to drastic measures I’d sooner sell my house than my bus. I’d never be homeless at least.

Buy wisely and you will not regret it. Buy on a whim and it could cause a few sleepless nights! Plenty of help on here so don’t be afraid to ask questions before parting with your hard earned!
