Well pipped head into airdubbers this morning 10 mins popped outlet valve out and out dropped the split valve guide which has damaged the head as new guide drops in now loose , new head on way for tomoz be back on the road tomoz night poss wed ready for trip to the Wirral on Friday !! Lessons learned here !!
Split valve guide is pretty unusual, must have got damaged going in, can't you just fit an over sized guide ?
I'm gonna take it to a place to see if they can fix it and if so got spare or send head back buddy , but how easy are they to pop in ur self I read they need machining in
If the guides damaged and your fitting oversized guides because the head must be damaged too, then yes it will ner machining , it's possible to do it with a hand reamer but you need the tools etc , so a machine shop is likely your best option and quickest, though a new head is a very quick fix and a spare head may not be a bad thing to have considering the miles your covering, I know your not keen but maybe pulling the other head isn't a bad idea, if there's nothing wrong it will only cost you an hour or so
did someone say valve guides...? Whilst i'd anticipated them worn I didn't anticipate split but judging by where the engine came from nothing surprises me doesn't sound terminal yet though, you should be able to get it fixed cheap enough, assuming there is no damage to the head. I'd send an e-mail to the blokes who built it for you and let them know what tossers they are. These cheap engine shops must be rolling in money. I think i'm going to start taking the crap off the rockery of shame and knocking out some injuns
i doubt they'll fix it as you've pulled it apart but you can try, that's what a warranty is for, although i guess you've voided it. It's one of those things mate, you've bought a cheap crappy engine from known peddlers of cheap crappy engines which has got you a few thousand miles and it might get you a few thousand more - only you can decide when to stop putting money into it. Me? I'd be straight down there with a writ How much are you being quoted to repair that head? To be honest i'm surprised it got you half as far so who knows, it could go on forever.
I'm working all week this chap says he thinks it's past fixing if he is honest but worth a try so not sure what to do may just send it off buy new 1 and have a spare and then back on the road Atleast !! Kingfisher say there busy till next week allso !! I may bite bullet and sort it least I no I got a good head then!! Would over filling oil done this much damage there was some pretty big hills but only about 10 miles if that the. Drained it when realised !!
I expect if you send them pictures of the head etc, they may send you a head or the price of one, worth a try, on the plus side the guide didn't fall out and destroy the engine, it's an arse but an easy fix and not mega expensive. You can be driving for the weekend
Great news spoken to place were I got the engine and there sending me a new head out in the next few days FOC !! Let's see if it turns up !! What's the betting I get my old head back I gave him lol but least there sending something !!
Aren't those engines sold as having new heads fitted? If that is the case, then why does the head that you pulled off have the VW rework stamp on it? And a new guide would be loose, as the rework heads normally have oversized guides fitted to them!!
As i told you si , a friend had one and it went fobar , but they did sort it out , ive yet to know how the replacements going as hes doing a body resto. I think unfortunately you get what you pay for but also its the luck of the draw whos engine youve got that they had a go at , and whether its a friday afternoon job or what ever, lets face it even the top boys get it wrong sometimes . Hope you get it sorted ok , one thing about you i like is you get on and get it sorted and you are living the dream. and CAKE
Yes buddy my pals say the same if a job needs doing I'll get it done I'll have her back on the road in no time think new head is comin tomoz !! Then pop her back in and give her a test run and Friday the next chapter of her 1000 mile + adventure continues .......... Cheers for all your guts help and advise !!!!! U fixed it for me yet again between u all !!! And I leant a lot about how to take apart engines !!
I see that's y he not want it back cuz this heads allready been over sized then may be useful for a part in future cheers for the heads up though Paul (No pun intended )
