Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by roocarl, Oct 20, 2011.

  1. I always had a slight whiff of fuel if i filled to the brim, so just stopped on first click, no probs just presumed filler neck not a perfect seal but tonight i did a fast tight u turn in front of my house leaving a 30ft obvious trail of fuel, plus the tank is only half full , but no drips when van was parked and level?

    any advice gratefully received

if you have small hands you can go in through the "paint can lid" i need to do mine too....there are some tips and pics on here somewhere but i can't recall where now, i'm sure someone will add to this thread, you'll find the pipe full of cracks and has gone porous.

I'm doing one now. So much easier with the engine out. If you have a T4 engine with the service hatch it is somewhat easier to do with the engine in than on a 1600.

If you do drop the engine, replace all the little gas tank breather pipes too. They also perish.

  6. This hole? Part of my resto will involve changing all hoses, be stupid not to!

Can anyone tell me my paint code from this? (not the spider!)

  8. im going for filler pipe elbow to body. remove the cap and look for splitting rubber through the filler hole try pushing on the rubber with your finger

  9. 100% it will be the tank to filler pipe as this is the one that gets corroded by the fuel. As per the one shown in the photo

  11. Time will tell. I guess so - the one I bought from Heritage was very well constructed and had a label indicating its suitability to EN standard fuels. I have to check my records to see when I fitted mine but its a few years (4 or 5) and its sound as a pound. I'll l et you know in 20 years

I hear the brasilian bays have the same issue on new vans, but this is likely due to the high percentage of ethanol used in the North and South American fuels necessitating a different grade of rubber - once it comes into contact with European grade fuel it degrades almost straight away.
