You have to either take the heads off, or if you are fitting telescopic ones, you can just bend the old ones out. ( once the pushrods have been removed)

    Type 1 or Type 4?

Looking at the two threads sticking out, that's a type 4 thermostat bracket.

Can you confirm what motor @Adie11

No need to replace the head studs or the nuts unless they are crusty with rust and eaten away.

When you replace the seals, check that the tubes havent been buzzed through by the rectangular air deflector plate that sits in between the cylinders, usually missing, alwys required.

Also the tubes must be stretched back to specification before refiitng I think 210mm , thats what new ones from JK come as. Or it will probably leak anyway.

Keep the pushrods in order as they come out too.

Clean sealing metal surfaces, no sealant needed, if there is any there get rid of it.
Just rub some oil on the seal and then spin the tubes as the head goes back on. Ideal end up with the seams at the top.
Make very sure none of the tubes are trapped, they require a lot of care .... sometimes I poke the pushrods back in to stop the tubes falling out totally.

Lubricate head nuts, torque in the correct sequence and to the correct torque, unless you want to add exhaust leaks to the repertoire.

  7. No, but you'll have to take the engine out to get the heads off.
