  1. Those stands that some one put on here last year that where cheep.
Big black 3tonn jobs are ace they use 2 pints to secure and have a wide footprint

  2. thanks

Then C is looking like the option for me

  3. I think they were these

These 2 pin ones have better lift than the ratchet ones, but i think i prefer ratchet style with a back up saftey pin

  4. Those are the ones. Heavy things too

if it helps @paulcalf after seeing your thread I've order A. (but jack only) as its such a good price, I've been either using a cheap 2ton jack for years which is buckled or borrowing a 3 ton one

  6. Yep, these are great. Recommended.

  7. which are you recommending: the one with the two pins or the ratchet ones

  8. excellent i glad one of us has made a decision and placed an order

When it turns up tomorrow do you mind just using it to whip your engine out please - then ill know if that one is good enough or if i need the garage version with more lift!

  9. The plain tube ones with the double pin. I’ve always had my doubts about Chinese ratchet castings

  10. I thought sgs stuff was british made and good quality?

The ratchet ones also have an additional steel locking pin to stop the ratchet closing

I thought They looked far more substantial the sgs stands with those two thin pins holding everything up

  11. It’s certainly good quality, with big wide circular feet. Not sure it’s made in the UK. The pins are really thick.

  12. I've had 2 sets of the 6 ton double pin stands... really well made, decent wide stable base and loads of height for crawling under...so much infact that the jack wont lift the bay any more!! Also perfect size to fit under front and rear torsion bars with no chance of sliding off

  13. The pins are 8mm ish on mine I would have issues with those

  14. Pins on my JS3s are 12mm thick.

  15. Might go and see what mine are lol

  16. +1 on both counts - i wouldn`t trust the cast ratchet ones with such a heavy weight ..

I bought 4 of the SGS axel standa - they`re spot on , had mi van on them for months during last summers resto If you can wait until Techenders i have two you can `borrow`for as long as you need

As for the jack , it`s a big heavy 3 ton Clarke jobbie which lifts the front axle just high enough to get the SGS stands under - not really enough lift hence can`t really recommend it but it does the job ....

    :hattip:

  17. Thanks that is a very kind offer to lend me some of yours, but after 20+ years of ownership i really should try and become self sufficient.

I feel I should show my van some love for its recent sterling work, by changing the oil myself.

I'm leaning towards the double pin model now as they give more height, cost less and all you 'proper knowledgeable people' seem to think they are the way to go

  18. So you can sleep tonight ;), here's a pic of my SGS JS3s. They extend to 560mm, which is actually too tall for my jack (a 2 ton Clarke like @Lasty 's). Look at the pins on that! Pfwoor.

I parked a Beetle next to it, so you can judge the sheer size of the thing.

  19. That made me laugh .

I'm going to have to order a big ladder to get the pins in then
