Help indicators not working!

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by 77bay, Sep 16, 2019.

  1. Currently away on holiday and my indicator fuse blew. Tried the hazards and the fuse also blew on that.

Got lots of spare fuses with me so trying to find the short with no success, in fact it is not just blowing fuses now it is melting them completely!

For the few seconds the fuse for the indicator remains intact the right hand lights work but nothing on the left. The hazards don’t work at all and blow the fuse immediately.

I can hear the relay clicking but not sure which is the relay and whether that means it is working. Some pics below.

    The bulbs seem fine!

    Any ideas?

Try taking the bulbs out on the left and using the RHS indicators, there may be a leak through one of the LH bulbs

Is that a common flasher for both indicators and hazards?

  4. Would the bulbs not blow? However, thanks for the tip will try that.

  5. Common flasher? I’ll probably regret asking that but not sure, are you talking about the stalk or the relay?

The same flasher unit does both functions. Another possibility is a faulty hazard switch, try and disconnect the feed from the relay to the hazard switch and see if that gives you indicators.

Take a look round the back of the nearside rear light cluster too, look for wires hooked off due to things stored on the left hand side, or leisure battery sliding around.

The fuses melting rather than straight blowing means that the short is not a good quality connection.. so it might be wire resting on something.

While its probably not relevant here, my left hand indicator fuse blowing was when the indicator wiring was rubbed bare by the top of the hand brake lever. Hill starts caused the fuse to blow if I indicated left ... going to Cornwall you will have more frantic use of the handbrake..

The idea of pulling out bulbs is a good one. Then worth checking also inside the wiring of the front nearside indicator fitting, and any loose wires around it.

  8. I'd agree with @Fruitcake , sounds like the failure is on the left hand side. Look for short circuits on the front or rear units. Assuming you have enough fuses, remove the front and rear separately and try each, that might help narrow it down. The emergency hazard lights just use both left and right flasher circuits at once, if the left indicator blows the fuse, the hazards will too.

  9. I succumbed out of desperation booked into a local garage this morning. Chances are as you all say it is on the left somewhere but god knows where!

  10. Do let us know what it was, if you can? It might be something worth remembering, thanks.

No input, but I feel a compulsion to insert a comma after the word ‘help’ in the thread title as I keep reading it wrong and wondering if ‘ help indicators ‘ are a Westfalia extra!

  12. Unfortunately, I’m unable to edit the title but yes it should have a comma.

Apologies to all not had a reception in the last couple of days. It was grounding behind the front left indicator. Two bare connections were touching the body. A simple five minute job but missed it whilst rushing to find it on the campsite.

Thank you for the advice whoever said it was on the left.
