Have i been ripped off here?

  1. Breather pipes from tank should go to a T piece then to the air filter preferably through a charcoal filter first.

I don’t have a problem with fuel filters in the engine bay, believe it or not properly sized hoses and pipes or filters don’t require clips, the fuel breather isn’t actually going to breath like that, it needs a t piece and vent into the air filter, not ripped off

  3. Fair play but i`m mr belt an` braces , why take a chance ...

  5. They do have air cooled engines, as does mine on a 2003 plate. They opted for water cooled 1.4 Polo engines about 2009.

  6. I'd call that an early Brazilian, 2006 onwards I call a late Brazilian which had the water cooled engines.

  7. They've been making T2's in Brazil since 1976, so I think my 2003 is a late one.

  8. Hi Carl hope your well n happy in the new howc . Why are you suggesting being ripped off , has he charged you a lot for not doing the breather bit wrong ? The other stuff as said , if it’s 5.6 mm pipe you have trouble getting it on let alone it coming off , I had to cut mine off but I did use clip just because I’m me . If your dizzy doesn’t have a vac can on it’s 009 which is why blocked off on carb . That’s way it’s done . Yep breather pipe needs tee piece to air filter . At least he’s put your fuel filter up out of the way but above gearbox would be safer maybe . Get the tee piece done and have some fun ,you have done a stonking job restoring it so ........................ enjoy .

  9. Still air cooled, so not that late.

Also the point of this was about was filters in the engine bay, I suspect VW fitted clamps on them?

no hose clips required , but if your getting anal about hose clips change the one on the pressure side of the fuel pump or at least fit one the correct size.

fuel line hose clips are of the type you have on the carb or even plastic ratchet tooth type are better.

The old school hose clips need to be the correct diam so they maintain a circular clamping force on the hose without distorting it .

Tighten up a hose clip in your hand and youll see it eventually distorts and it will also cut into the rubber.

There is no pressure on the filter side so no need for clips providing the hose is a good fit. kinda same idea as the inlet on your pump, which does not have a clip either ..

most folk will fit a screw on the vacuum hose but there are proper blanking sleeves or even a black allen head which just looks a wee bit better or even the vac hose blocked off with solid rubber round stock.. but thats a real anal waste of time .. and folk just wont pay for that level of attention..

  11. Oh ok, I'll refer to my 2003 van as a 'not that late' bay from now then.....

Also, my reply about fuel filters was clearly relating to fitting them in the engine bay. I didn't mention clamps at all, but to clarify for you, VW fit a clamp on both sides of the filter.

With all this technical talk, we've lost sight of the original question: "Have I been ripped off?"

I think this all depends on how much the mechanic charged for the work, of which I can find no trace in the thread.

I have nothing to say other than what’s been said. I think the guy has done what you asked, but showed his limited knowledge re the breather pipes ( not uncommon) I did however edit the original post to enlarge the pictures.

  14. The guy charged me £900 to get it going. I physically put the engine and everything else in. He then plumbed it in, wired it up and got it going.

The main question of the thread really should have been "is this right". But i have the answers i needed.
Ill get some more fuel pipe and some clips and change the fuel line. Ill stick the filter outside the engine bay just for added safety.

Ill get a better picture of the engine bay and stick it up to see if you eagle eyed bunch can see any other problems

  16. Yeah thought it was. He stuck an MOT on it too which i later found out i didnt need. Mot exempt.

Heres a pic of the engine bay.

  20. I've just noticed the hot air intake hose and the feed to the heat exchanger are swapped over (two hoses on the right of your engine bay picture) hopefully others can confirm this
