Guidance please - gas bottle straps and insurance

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Robert Jackson, Oct 15, 2018.

  1. Learned folks of TLB I seek enlightenment....

I have been asked for a photo of my gas bottle with 2 securing straps (mine has always had one) and its the same insurer since 2011

Is this normal the insurer is now insisting on it before they will cover me?

    Thanks in advance

Never had that question asked by my insurers......and my gas bottles sit in cupboards but there's no straps and never have been. I also carry a spare which isn't strapped in either. I use small campingaz bottles.

  3. I’ve never heard of that either? Which company is it?

  4. I read that as chimpanzees

  5. Never heard of this either, and also have two "unstrapped" bottles on board. Choices are:

1 Take bottles out and photo the empty space
    2 Shop elsewhere for insurance
3 Couple of bungees and some screw in eyelets for a quick fix

Never been asked by the insurance (Footman James) but the bottle was checked by a bloke from Irish Ferries when we went over from Holyhead to Dublin last year...

  7. Choice 2 is the best. Its time you changed insurers.

Ive never been asked either, the only question I have been asked is that of carrying a fire extinguisher on board. We do :)

My Motorhome only has one strap on each gas bottle, and I think they are much more specific on regs than our campervans. Seems a strange request.

It’s normal if the rules have changed, stick another on they’re only a couple of quid

    What's the issue?
If it's a condition of insurance that the vehicle is a safe as possible for the occupants, why would you not?
I get that its potentially more regulation, who likes regulations yada, yada ya etc and that the argument is that the only winner is the insurance company with yet another wriggle out clause in the event of a claim but really.....
Anything that prompts you to consider the safety of a gas installation cant be a bad thing can it?
Changing insurers with no thought is not serious advice is it @mgbman ?

  12. I don't disagree that anything to make life a bit safer isn't a bad thing. But, it isn't the insurance companies place (IMO) to insist on spurious points that need to be addressed (and to insist on evidence of this) - if they were to do this, wouldnt it make more sense that they insist on having a photo of tyre depths, or brake pad thicknesses. Where does it end, "please provide proof you don't drive in high heels"??

Vote with your feet I say...

  13. Just seen this top tip in VIZ

Remember to drill holes for the mounting straps into something fixed.

Do not drill holes into the gas bottle.....or you'll have to drill New holes every time you change the bottle.

Haha:thumbsup:, valid points and as I said, nobody wants more regulation.
But they are camper vans and like it or not the evil insurers assess risk based on that fact.
MOT covers road worthiness, or not, but fortunately there are no regulatory bodies covering leisure and habitation systems. That is left to the 'ability' of the installer in our case.
I'm sure lots would rather send a picture or two of their safe installation to the insurer rather than be submitted for government inspection.:)

  15. use 2 belts pop riveted to the cupboard strap around the bottles simples ,
