Greasing Front Beam

  1. I have a few rattles in the front when I hit bumpy roads, so I figured as I've sorted the front end out it might be the beam not being greased (twas on the to-do list, many to-do lists ago )...or some of the rattles could be the handbrake cables, so looked up greasing the beam in Haynes and it said to take the weight off of the front end otherwise the grease won't get in...is this true ? as I was under the impression that the leaves twisted when under load and can't figure that twisting them would stop grease getting in...and it is a Haynes manual after all. and not as trustworthy as folk working on them regularly.

  2. Cheers dude...looks like Haynes were right...I'll dig out the axle stands ::)

  3. You need to jack it up, then pump plenty of grease in...don't forget the idler pin the middle (five nipples in all). Surprising how much grease vanishes into the beam.

  4. Ive started putting my beam back together today after repairing it recently
I decided to remove the torsion leaves and degrese them and coat in brand new grease before refitting

Two things i learnt during this

1 The torsion tubes hold an amazing amount of grease

2 The torsion leaves are an utter nightmare to refit once removed

  5. Cheers dudes, I'll stock up on more grease then.

Weird...Haynes manual with useful info ???

I was amased how much the beam took when I did mine.
Also at the noises the seals make as the old grease is pushed out!

  7. I've been meaning to do this, first dry day now & I'm on it. ;)
