  2. Some good finds @Razzyh. Vectra looks good for the money - I would never have considered one (and can't say that I actually like it) but you can't really argue with the spec and price.

Have to say I have a bit of a fear of used car dealers... was brought up to avoid them - have always bought and sold cars privately in the past. Maybe it's time I got over it...

Do yourself a favour and check MOT history.

  5. Might well do that... did once before - was quite fun and I ended up with a nice motor.

  6. I don't know if you have a car yet but I recommend an old volvo v70. I've got a tdi 98 version for little money and it just keeps going!
Its large and eats miles and cheap to run. The build quality is awesome. It does take some time to find a good example, like most motors.
    Good luck!

  7. If u want a car to just drive and not have to worry about it going wrong there is only 1 option.
Fast, reliable, economical, huge, cheap to run.
    Volvo v70 d5.
Just sold mine as I had had it for nearly 4 years. 40 to 50 mpg, 150k miles and it drove like it has just driven out of the factory, tight as anything. If u have never driven one, I guarantee the performance will blow you away, unbelievable. Mine was a 54 plate, 1500 squids worth. 163bhp is the one to go for. If u drive one you will buy it.
My previous volvo was an auto petrol but not good on fuel. Sold that at 12 years old with 180k and it felt brand new.

Check MOT history. That gives you a good indication of how well it's been looked after

It seems the consensus is get a Volvo. Maybe next time for me...

  9. My uncle has one of those Volvos. I went for a drive in it and the whole cab was in bits because he had been trying to sort it out a water leak. Put me off tbh... seemed too modern/new to be having those sorts of issues, but then it probably was over ten years old.

I've driven quite a few of the older ones 240s 440s 740s etc... Didn't like any of them! Sort of always fancied one before I drove it but couldn't quite bring myself to do it :D

Honestly, I think the most sensible thing would be a Passat. That 9000 is nice though. Had Saabs before, I like them (the older ones are incredibly well-built), but they are more finnicky than VWs.

First time I drove a Volvo I nearly went through the front windscreen, it was only the seat belt that saved me. Air brakes I think. It was an old thing probably W reg. Massive it was.

  11. Actually maybe he's got a V50. I dunno.

  12. park it on a hill and set off in second or drive ,boot it so if the clutch plates are slipping you will hear them...Test the gearbox oil ,it must be red , if it is grey run for the hills...:D

It's a bit rusty, and with almost 170000 miles... fairly tired. It's also a manual diesel, when I wanted a petrol auto. But after some haggling it was dirt cheap, I like the colour, it has a good stereo, and weirdly (and randomly) it once belonged to a friend (who loved it) so I know some of its history. So far it seems to be an incredible car for the money.

So now the Golf is up for sale - cheap, reliable classic VW motoring - no scene tax on this one:

Actually the Merc is making me question what the camper is for... ...it's a car that I want to drive to Spain right away! I love my bus but the idea of doing some serious miles quickly and in comfort is appealing at the moment and the money from the bus would buy a nice tent and a few years worth of hotels... we'll see.
