WANTED Gearbox wanted and CK gearbox for sale

Discussion in 'Late Bay Parts Classifieds' started by Ash9889, Mar 26, 2017.

  1. After a gearbox as I've recently learnt that I have the wrong one. Any gearbox that will fit a 1600 engine would be good.

For sale a CK gearbox all feels good in selecting gears. For a 1700 t4 engine. Offers

    Thanks!

You won’t have any difficulty selling a CK gearbox, but think carefully before you do.

  3. ??? Is it "special"?

It’s not particularly special but 1600 users often want the higher final drive ratio. It will fit what you have, try it first then sell it if you don’t t like it.

All you need is a shorter input shaft !

It may already be shorter. It’s the clutch that is wrong.

  7. So I was told the ratios would be all out of whack and should replace? Gonna measure shaft cut if needed and see. Easier than sourcing and selling

  8. How big should the input shaft be after modification?

I can measure a 1600 box input shaft tomorrow if no one gives you a reply tonight dude.

There is very little difference in the 1-4 gear ratios in any VW gearbox, what changes is the ring and pinion ratio. As far as I know the CK box for a 1700 T2 has a 5.429:1 final drive ratio and a CG box for a 1600 T2 also has a 5.429:1 final drive ratio.

    Just measured a type 1 1600 box.

It's roughly 32mm from the end of the shaft to the splines. If yours measures the same then you just need to change the clutch if the ratios are the same.

i think the end of the shaft is the same length, you need to know the overall length, or the amount it sticks out past the bell housing, I think theres 15mm difference, but its been a long time since I chopped one down, his clutch is wrong for the gearbox

I thought it was just the end that was longer, as the clutch and splines sit in the same place... could be wrong though. Have you got a type 4 one at hand to measure Davidoft?

Not that I can get to, I could be wrong too ;)

@Ash9889 I might have the ratio number wrong up there ^ but according to this chart (from another forum) there are common final drive ratios for 1600 and 1700 gearboxes. 4th and final ratios are the ones to look at.

Cut off the CK input shaft if you need to and fit the correct clutch and it will be fine.

  17. Just to confirm a few things my end. My input shaft sticks out 20mm past bell housing and 40mm from the splines.

I think the 228mm clutch is deeper hence why they made deeper bellhousings standard from 75 on

According to Google, folks usually cut off about 10mm, and then put a bit of taper back on the end as original to avoid knackering the bearing when putting the engine back in. I have never done it by the way, so I will leave it up to you to decide if you want to do it or not..:p
