Gearbox removal?

  1. Hi everyone,
As some of you may know, the wife and I bought our first VW last week in the form of '79 bay (converted from a panel van to a camper) with a 2.0 ford pinto mated to the original gearbox.
One of it's (growing) list of things I need to sort is the gearchange which, from a bit reading, may well turn out to be a seal in the nose end of the gearbox. It also seems you need to remove the gearbox to renew this, and, typically, it also seems the engine and gearbox have to come out together.
Just wondering what the reason is for latter, and whether the reason for this is potentially negated by it having a pinto engine - the mass of insulation tape, dangling wires and maze of water pipes is putting me off the idea of my first mechanical job being a complete engine and gearbox job! :-

I've done a few mechanical jobs of similar hassle in the past (we've got an old 80's mini with a vauxhall nova engine and gearbox that I've had to take out a few times), but was hoping to avoid some of the pain!

    Thanks in advance!

    Richard

  2. the gear box has to come out as the nose cone sits on top if the rear torsion tube

the engine has to come out first because you need to split the engine from the clutch

as the gear box can't go any more forwards the engine has to go back

to get the engine to move back you have to unbolt if from the gear box and remove the stabilizer bar on the rear, then pull it back about 10cm

once this is done there isn't anything holding the engine in place and you might as well remove the whole thing and make more space for removing the gear box

  3. Cheers for the reply - looks like I've got a full on weekend coming up soon then! Might have to live with it until after busfreeze! :(
    Thanks again,
    Rich

  4. us mini people need to stick together

  5. Cool - a fellow mini and VW owner then! We've got 6 minis and the one camper at the moment (plus my boring daily car) :)

  6. After a closer look this morning I might not need to do the bush in the gearbox - some of the ones along the convoluted route of linkages between the gearbox and gear lever itself are either worn or completely missing!

  7. 2 minis and a camper for us

    a 1965 998 and 1990 cooper 1275

  8. gearchange issues might just be down to the fact that the shifter coupleing and a couple of other bushes need replacing... no need to drop the motor or box to do them :)
