Gearbox refurbishment:

Discussion in 'Modified Shizzle' started by agaric, May 5, 2016.

  1. Hi all,

My scooby is currently running with a standard 3 rib gearbox that needs some attention (cannot put my foot down in 4th are I loose the gear ). While I am at it I was thinking about getting a longer 3rd and 4th.

    So my questions are:
    • Can a 3-rib can be rebuilt as strong as a 6-rib? (not in term of ratio but purely solidity)
    • Who would you recommend for the job?
    • I quite like the figures from limebugs:
    http://www.limebug.net/product/view/2533/t2-1968-79-ultra-flyer-gearbox-759mph-3500rpm-170
    http://www.limebug.net/product/view/1999/t2-1968-79-super-flyer-gearbox-713mph-3500rpm-887

A bit less the prices... :(
Do you have a ball park estimate of what a similar gearbox would cost at the recommended places?
    Cheers,
    Jb

A 3 rib will never be as physically strong as a 6 rib as it's the ribs that add strength. That's why all the drag racers use them.
No reason why the gears can't be swapped out to be the same though.

  3. I had my 3 rib gear box swapped to 6rib gear ratios by Bears Motorsport in Birmingham.

He said he had never seen a physical gearbox actually break, he is involved in VW racing teams?

Of course it could be completely different when you put Subaru power through one!

  4. That's what I thought but wanted a confirmation.
Do you know how low you can go with your final ratio (for a scooby) whilst still being able to maintain correct speed on hills?

    That's a good new!
Just checked their website. I think I'll give them a call.

Not sure mate to be honest!

  6. Can I ask you what is your final ratio and RPM at 70?
Can you maintain speed (or at least stay in gear) uphill?

I've got a bog standard (as far as I know) 6 rib which does 3700 ish at 70.
No problem up hills at 70 in 4th.

  8. Thanks! I'll use that as a reference point.

  9. @Baysearcher : I remember reading somewhere that you had a spreadsheet with all the gearbox ratios. If this is true, mind sharing it?

PM me your email mate and I'll try and find it.

  11. I got my 3 rib built up with a 6 rib final drive and a higher 4th gear as well. Cogbox did mine, cheaper than the Limebug price, which isn't surprising as they will just sub it out anyway.

Just be aware that you will need more torque to pull the longer gear, not sure from the above posts if you have a Scooby or not.

  12. Yes my van is a scooby.
I may have found someone selling a recently rebuilt 6 rib gearbox so let's see how it goes...

  13. The RJES website lists gearboxes codes and their gear ratios.

  14. Pete , the cog box built mine , highly recommend him ,
Tell him the HP and he will build you a bomb proof box to suit . best thing I ever bought for the van . my gearing is taller in all four gears .
