gearbox question

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by fred8888, Oct 10, 2011.

  1. i've just bought a T2B Berlin from 1978
It has a 2l GE engine but the gearbox has the number CK 03 10 2
Googling i found this is a 1.7 engine gearbox or is it also used on 2l engines?
Does anyone know what ratio's this transmission has?

    Thanks

  4. just saw the engine code on the engine itself starts with CB...
    GRRRR :-[ This is a 1700, no?
On the cooling housing it says GE...
How is it possible to have 2 different engine codes on the engine? Bus should have a 2l GE motor but has a 1700 with a 1700 gearbox or is there still a chance i'm mistaking and it's a 2l after all??
How can you see the difference between a 1.7 and a 2l?

  6. FYI - 1700 engines are from 72/73. They stopped using them then when they realised just how unsuited they are to a bus

What's does it say on the registration document?

  8. i only got the american title (no engine mentioned)
From the M plate i just decoded this bus should have a 2l GE.
Why do they change it to a 1.7 then? Even the gearbox.
I already called the seller and asked him for a compensation.
What would be fair or should i ask him to take the bus back?

I was so happy with my new bus (untill today)...

  9. You'll not notice mutch difference from the 1700 vs the 2L. be happy :)

  10. seller will take bus back. problem solved.
But now i need to find another one :(
so...if someone has a nice 2l LHD westy (i prefer the Helsinki) let me know

  11. Was it something else about the bus you didn.t fancy, or was it just that it had a 1700 ?
    Any pics of it ?

I noticed in a customers 2L bus with a rev counter I was at 50mph at 4,000 rpm in 3rd so red-lining you could hit just over 65 BEFORE changing to 4th. That was a 2l but TBH the power was beginning to fade and it would be rather rude to red-line a customers bus! If that had been a 1700, it would have been accelerating in a sprightly fashion at this point.

I think VW wanted more power and were a bit half-hearted with the 1700 before they took it on the chin (gradually!) First trying the 1800 which is also high revving I believe, then going for a longer stroke 2l. I know what you mean though - the 2L has much more grunt and is relaxing to drive, but for engine screaming T4 fun it has to be the 1700 for me. :)

  17. It depends on how much you paid but that looks like a very nice bus from that photo. Only you can decide if the engine is a big issue. I'd stick with what you've got if its a good bus and ask the seller for some compensation, around £500 if he mis-sold it to you.

Is it worth all of the hassle though?
    :)

  18. and if I were you i'd move away from the bureaucracy of Belgium and go to one with a proper government - like France
