My EMPI has been welded twice. The reverse lock out fell off and I also had to narrow the slot in the plate as it moved too far left and right and mussed the gears that way too.

In the original installation there would have been a choice of either a taller or a shorter metal rectangle spacer under the shifter, the taller one reduces the throw required to change gears.

  3. Had a few weeks of the gear change working with the original type gear stick in place - but now can't get 3rd gear. All other gears are fine, its like somebody has been and remove it over night. Have been tapping the selector plate but still no joy. Any ideas or is it a case of trial and error with the selector plate. I'm guessing its moved. Any thoughts?

  4. When I first got my bus gear selection was dangerously random so I replaced bushes and the joint cage and had more than a few days getting the gear stick "just right" , I have the empi shifter, which actually works well. I have yet to fit the metal spacer under the shifter
which will replace the mahogany spacer I used to "temporarily" get things going. This was nearly three years ago. As they say if it ain't broke.....
Just make sure it's nice and tight when you get it dropping into gear nicely best of luck

This can mean the shifter plate needs to rotate a bit. Alternatively if third is really there just you have to bring the gear lever slightly to the left of the endstop, the shifter plate might have worn out.

Or the bolt in one of the shifter shaft couplers was not a pointy one with the point in the middle of its dimple and it has moved a bit.
