Gear selector advice

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by 3crispies, Apr 11, 2017.

  1. After near miss on roundabout need to finally sort properly.

Have replaced rear coupling. Front bush. Lubricated couplings. Gear box oil change. Gear selector plate. Gear shift spring/rubbers.. Adjusted gear shift. Replaced clutch cable/bowden and adjusted.all done
Still struggle getting 1st when first stationary and up/down shifting into 2nd most of time. Can select when engine off. 3/4th up down ok and reverse ok even if hit few false ones .
Think hockey stick ok and well greased.
Two things planning on dropping box and new clutch in winter. Would new gear stick such as empi help or is there anything else Im missing as suddenly stopping on main roundabout fully loaded is scary

  2. Have you got the floor plate adjusted right? Moving it forwards will improve selection of 1 and 2.

  3. Try nipping your clutch cable up a bit more. If the clutch isn't disengaging fully, it can make it difficult to get into 1st.

  4. What @snotty said as its when engine is running, sounds clutch related

  5. @snotty tried that before came away did 2 full turns no better and think may be slightly dragging now. Doh

  7. Yeah agree when had clutch off when engine out over year ago had plenty life left but probably done 8k since.. didnt know if 80 gear oil was thicker when cold is it worth changing oil again

  8. I had awful shifting problems, renewed and replaced almost everything under the bus to tighten up the shift and make it more compliant and useable
Took a trip in a mates bus who had a Gene Berg shifter installed and the difference was night and day over the standard setup
Might be worth looking at installing one of them to yours or atleast trying another bus with one fitted and see if you like it?

  9. Try putting Castrol Syntrans in the box - worth doing anyway, IMHO. My box works better from cold since I put Syntranx in.

If you have SAE 80 gear oil in the box it’s the wrong oil. As snotty says use Castrol Syntrans Multi Vehicle 75W90. Or Castrol Syntrans Transaxle 75W-90 (available from Opie Oils) or any other fully synthetic 75W90 GL-4 (not GL-5) oil.

Once the correct oil is in the box if there is still a selection problem it could be a worn hockey stick ball or a cracked selector guide inside the nose cone.

I've got empi one on pickup and it is better than standard stick, they come up cheap on here from time to time.

  16. That's as may be.....and I usually run away from anything JK sell.....but this actually works and has been doing so for the last year or more.

  17. adding a "quick shift" plate to a shifter with a worn ball wont' make it any better IMO.

With all the bushings replaced and clutch properly adjusted mine was still crap - the ball thing at the bottom of the stick was worn on my oem shifter - replaced with a berg and it's spot on now.

Where abouts are you based? you're welcome to try my berg (i'm oxford) pretty sure i still have the oem stick kicking around somewhere in the garage - @3crispies you're welcome to this if you want -see if its any better than yours.
