Galvanising wheels

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by paradox, Jan 23, 2012.

  1. Can any one think of any reason to not galvanise a set of steel wheels?

Apart from it will look rubbish

  2. you need to etch prime to paint galv, the rust might come thru ;) they might look Marmite :)) will prob look good till they oxidise??

I would of thought they would flex to much.

l can't see the point. It's funny really but you hardly see really tatty steel wheels on a bus in any condition. Perhaps VW should have treated the shells in the same way as it did the wheel :)

  9. Theres a bloke near me sending a chassis for galving later in the year and he said i could chuck a few bits in when it goes

I was thinking of bumpers and wheels

the temperatures involved are a bit high. chassis will warp at high temp and you will get drip edges forming. a wheel can be seriously unbalanced if it is dipped badly or in an incorrect position do you mean Electrogalvanized? as mentioned before the rust will need to be completely removed. there should be a better solution than zinc but the zinc primer used in early VWs has made some last for decades. modern cars have a max life of 14 years (volvo I believe) but vw never had a life expectancy back in the times they used the zinc primer and thicker steel.

have you thought of anodizing a fresh set and then painting them?

  12. Seems like its not worth the bother then i was only considering it because it would have been cheap or a favour owed and my bus is going to get a lot of stick off tarmac

Its a modded landrover chassis the guys sending for dipping fish dude

  15. Usually if you send stuff for galvanising they will acid dip it first to derust it, then wash and dry it, then dunk in molten zinc. Looks good on lamp posts and comes out silver and shiny, but quickly goes grey. They won't rust again in a hurry but you'll want to paint them.

I'd definitely do it for the bumpers.
