Fuel tank sender leaks

  1. So, In preperation for RTTH tomorrow i popped down to the petrol garage and filled up the tank, i've just fitted a new sender, and lined the tank, when i say i filled up i mean up to the brim, i thought it was as good a way as any to test the pipes and clips round the tank, and in doing so i found one of the breathers on top the tank was weeping, no problem to sort but with the fire wall off i thought i'd check the seal round the sender, it was fine except that dished bit on top of the sender was full of petrol!? is it just that you shouldnt over fill the tank or do i have dodgy seal round the electric terminals of the sender?

    Any ideas greatly received!

    Thanks

    Dave.

and the morale of this story is......dont tinker just before you're going away!

can you take the sender out and double check the seal and that it is fitted properly?

  5. I dont think its the sender seal, it couldn't get from the seal to where the fuel is, which is in the top of the sender, i'm not to worried about using it to get to rtth i've drained a gallon out of it so its below the top of that tank, i think its dodgy seal round where the terminals come out the top of the sender unit itself.

  6. had a similar problem with ours after i fitted a new sender , the seal was to small and wouldnt sit tight , so i fiddled with it and it fell in the tank ,, i did manage to get it out with one of those grabbie things. but i filled the tank with the wrong seal in place and we had petrol all over the engine and the forcourt of the filling station ,,, see "those who never made it back " for pics
