Fuel tank fill hose woes

  1. 2 hours of my life I’m not going to get back today trying to fit a pipe that does not fit.

After moaning at custom and commercial that the small straight filler hose had perished in a year despite it being “German quality” they sent me their new version of this hose which has braiding on the outside.

I can only imagine the braiding is there to stop the hose kinking in the middle, as it’s not a straight piece originally but had a small bend. Despite this, all the aftermarket ones are straight pieces of pipe.

What the braiding actually does is stop the pipe bending which means you cannot pull the metal filler pipe into it after you have fitted the rubber to the tank first. The braiding very quickly slid back off the hose as you can see as the rubber expanded over the pipe/tank.

Does anyone actually make a small hose with the correct bend? Otherwise I think I’m gonna try cutting down the other long hose version as I’m sick of this job already.

  3. It is the same, but as I was saying it doesn’t bed in the middle so you can’t force the metal filler pipe into it far enough to get any purchase.

Looking round the usual suppliers there are several comments/reviews saying these are very short and clips only just hold them.

I’ve ordered the longer one - I will cut off the radius bend and use that, at a longer length than these short hoses

  4. I’m open to suggestions on how to fit it, but I’ve just tried fitting it to either tank or filler pipe first and can’t get enough purchase on the metal pipe to hold it with a jubilee clip

  5. When I did this job last year I ended up with a hose from an early and it was just too tight. I got some straight Mocal hose in 57 mm from Demon Tweeks. This is racing quality fuel resistant hose. I had to buy 200 mm and cut it down. It slipped on quite easily.

If @snotty hadn't been out listening to fine northern music, you could have slung it over his fence !
Does your bay have a filler flap ? This is a job I am not looking forward to doing.
That Desmond Tweeks stuff seems a good idea.....was it expensive @andyv ?

If it does the job safely and well, £46 a metre is not too much.

The later VWH pipe is £36 and is a quite plain soft unreinforced piece of rubber. When fitted across the gap on the later filler, I found it was exactly long enough to fit under Jubilee clips each end. There was no excess.
The original hose had the fabric external reinforcement, most other fuel hoses have internal reinforcement. Nylon or spectra/dyneema weave in the middle of the rubber.

If you are trying to chop it and fit it over the metal ends as in the pictures, I would send it back as it will crack too easily across the hard end of the metal tubes.

I would try use the reinforced hose like the Demon Tweeks hose. And make sure it is warmed up before you try, and use soapy water to help it on.

  8. I've got a length of this mocal pipe spare if anyone is interested? Leftover from resto.

2 1/4" diameter, 195mm long (that's what demon tweeks sent me.) More than enough for a late bay. £18 posted :)
