Fuel smell in rear of van

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by illzlee, Aug 19, 2019.

  1. I’m struggling with a whiff of fuel in the back of the van - particularly after left hand turns.

I’ve replaced the fuel tank filler neck already when I did the engine conversion, had trouble with one too short from c&c but fitted a 200mm Long one from them. It sits neatly on the tank neck and on the metal pipe from the filler - the jubilee clips are tight.

    2 questions really for you good people;

    1. How are the fumes getting into the cab from behind fuel tank housing?
    2. Anyone got any suggestions as to why this is leaking? (Anyone got any experience of similar)

    For context:
    - all fuel lines replaced with cohline ethanol proof lines 1 year ago
    - none of the breather pipes exist, mk3 golf carbon canister & solenoid fitted
    - mk3 golf gti engine, not aircooled

  2. Fuel sender seal is a possibility

  3. If it is left hand turns, I'd put money on it spilling from the filler, however new.

This^ Check the rubber elbow at the top of the filler tube.

  5. Also replaced during the conversion, but I did notice it’s not sat square behind the filler cap when at the fuel station.

Will have a look at this, ta

First time we got the whiff of fuel we found that the small rubber joint on the breather pipes at the back of the spare wheel well was porous/split.
Second time it was the elbow on the filler neck.
Third time was thanks to the person who refitted the interior whilst upholstering the van, by putting too long a screw in the rear bulkhead and piercing the fuel tank.

  7. Let the level go down below half tank then see if it smells ?

  8. It’s noticeably worse after filling up, hardly a problem when 1/4 tank

  9. Something not right with filler or cap then ? Do you corner hard ?

  11. Coincidence that I also swapped my original filler cap for a fancy chrome jk one.

Fuel tank was a brand new one during conversion.

Half the problem is there are so many variables as I swapped loads during the conversion!

Now you tell us. Anything chrome and especially if it’s from JK is suspect. If it’s a vented cap that’s probably where the whiff of fuel is from.

I have a JK fuel cap .. doesnt smell.

Does not take long for fuel filler top rubber elbow to split slightly and stink after fill up.

I would also suspect any claim of "its alright as I just did it" I managed to do up a fuel filler hose so the bit where it goes on the tank I could see looked OK , but the clamp was slightly crooked.
It actually dribbled petrol in Cornwall when parked across a 1 in 6 slope filler side down at the Seal Sanctuary.
Managed to fix it with severe pain and a smear of gasket sealant on the inside of the hose.. now replaced...

First "breakdown" I had in the van (turned out to be no fuel), recovery guy turns up and opens the engine bay with a fag hanging out his mouth. Made me a little nervous!
